More on the ESQ-1 patch auditioning bug... Looks like there is a bug, but also I was wrong about how the program is supposed to work. I was wrong in that JSynthLib requires you to use the "Send" option, which is conveniently bound to Ctrl-T so you don't have to keep using the mouse every time you want to audition a patch, to actually send a patch to the ESQ-1 edit buffer. Without doing that, it doesn't send anything, and you will end up hearing whatever patch was already loaded. Then again, there *is* a bug. I've verified by watching with the Midi monitor that nothing is ever sent to the ESQ-1 when you use the Send option. So you can't really audition patches after all.
