It seems Version.java was really supposed to go away, and (make-version) is out of date. Instead, I commented out line 85 of src/jsint/Evaluator.java: //error.println("\n\n"+Version.VERSION+"\n\n"); Now, src/build/bootstrap works. Personally, I'm happy enough with just a "> " prompt when I start up JScheme. But maybe there should be a (help) or (jscheme-version) users could type if they're going through Emacs buffers and can't remember which ones are running JScheme / mzscheme / MIT/GNU Scheme / Kawa / Guile / SISC / ...
