The release notes mention solaris. But there are no solaris-specific setup notes that I have found, and I was not aware that solaris can normally see the IrDA hardware as a serial port. Can anyone confirm that they have actually used it under solaris, and if so, which *specific* hardware, please?

I don't have any firsthand experience with JRed on Solaris. JRed uses the JavaCOMM API, so it should work on any platform for which there's an implementation. Sun's version works on Solaris and Windows; RXTX is available for Windows, Linux, and a lot of other platforms.
I've been using a JetEye IR dongle that just attaches to a serial port. As far as the OS knows, it's just another serial connection.
