Roy, I attended grammar school in the 1960s. There we learned that the personal pronouns "he" and "him" and suffix "-man" stood for BOTH male and female whenever a general (non-specific) person was being referenced. This definition has always been good enough for me, and I have never bought into the extremely awkward "he/she", "him/her", "-person" terminology. Those constructs do not add any meaning to the dialog, and only serve to appease the "politically correct" crowd.
