Adam, Development has stalled on this project. We haven't worked on it in a long time. If you are looking for a good linear solver you may want to look to other projects, but I don't know of many CSP solvers like ours. I would say that jOpt has some performance issues so depending on your problem set it may not run very efficiently. The license is CPL 1.0. It's very similar to the LGPL license. You can pretty much do whatever you want with the code. -Nick On Tue, Mar 29, 2011 at 9:49 AM, Adam Augusta <ro...@gm...> wrote: > I'm contemplating spending a lot of time with this library, possibly > even modifying it to work more effectively in scenarios where the > initial conditions change incrementally after the initial solution. > > Before I invest a lot of time in it, I want to have the opportunity to > be warded off by people in the know. I'm contemplating spending a lot of time with this library, possibly even modifying it to work more effectively in scenarios where the initial conditions change incrementally after the initial solution. Before I invest a lot of time in it, I want to have the opportunity to be warded off by people in the know. I notice that development has stalled. Are there other Java projects I should first consider? Has JOpt been in any way superseded or found wanting? Also, I'm having difficulty locating the license for the project. Is it LGPL or ASL? Thanks, Adam |

Hello all! It's been a while since the project saw much activity, but I'm pleased to announce the long awaiting refactoring of the project is now complete. I plan to make some pretty swift enhancements to the project now that this has been implemented. If you have any questions, as always, feel free to ask. Also, I have been in contact with a couple other developers who may be able to assist us in our project. CJ has already started committing new code in the newly refactored module. The other person I have communicated with actually runs his own sourceforge project named JSL. The link to the project is http://jsl.sourceforge.net. He has built a library that is very closed to the foundation that we will need for the searching portion of our project which is one of the big missing pieces. Hopefully I can convince him to combine his project with ours which sounds like he might be interested in doing. Drop me a line or post some comments on the forum. Let me know what you think. -Nick |

Hey all, I've updated the Java Docs on the site and created a new source file release (this probably won't be of interest if you are connected to CVS). I've also finished the FAQ's page so please give me any feedback you might have. I'm still working on the definitions page and a how-to doc for creating constraints. Also, any thoughts on the logo or spelling of jopt? -Nick |

Hi, Thanks Nick for revamping the FAQs page on website. Looks good now in organised format. We can add on it further some simple questions which might be useful for new comers. The suggestion by Janaki was one of them viz. What types of variables are supported by JOpt? In the additional information section, which talks about the general question and not specific to technologies like CSP, MP etc, i believe we need to add more questions for the first time user. We need to understand that user might not come to FAQs to understand the theoratical concepts, but the more about JOpt and its usage. It should be more focused on JOpt - The way its using technology. Agree ? Disagree ? Regarding the other topics listed in email below, i will get back later. Hey All, Here's a little status update on the project. I wanted to thank you all for the activity and interaction. It's great to finally have others to work with on this project :) New Stuff: * FAQ that was started by Mahendra is available on the main JOpt website. * Updating of the Javadocs for existing code has started. * JavaDocs are now available for viewing on the main website Items I hope to have finished soon: * Completing the FAQ list * Dictionary describing some common terms used in the project * How-to document for creating new constraints Open items: * A reminder that the items on the RFE list have a priority value assigned to them where the higher the number, the higher the importance. Also, the more important a task is, the more red it will appear in the search list. I wanted to clear any confusion on tasks that might be selected. The tasks with low numbers are currently much more complex than the higher ones since there are a number of simpler items that should be tackled first. * JOpt naming and logo. (The really insignificant stuff :) ) Should JOpt be spelled: JOpt, jOpt, Jopt, etc. Also, we need a logo. The main site has an x-ray scan of Homer Simpson, but this is just temporary :) * Refactoring - an ongoing disussion :) After generating the javadocs, I was considering reducing the number of packages in the project and extracting API focused classes into a seperate package structure. Ideas? Thanks again, -Nick |

Hello All! Here is another project update! I am behind schedule from when I said I would complete my tasks from the last update, but I am happy to say that I have completed most of my tasks. Here are some new items for people to follow up on: * New Documentation on the website: - a developer document has been created to explain what has already been created and how it works - a development environment setup document has also been created by Mahendra that will assist developers in getting the source code working http://jopt.sourceforge.net/documentation.php * RFE List has been started - a request for enhancement list has been started where I submitted a number of tasks that people will be able to sign up for to handle. Feel free to post new requests or added to these. - Let me know if you have any trouble working with the RFE list as far as assignments and categories. If you have suggestions for the usage of this, please let me know http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=112044&atid=661113 * The Forums is becoming more active - some people have already started using the forums to become more active and ask questions. keep it up! as developers begin to work on the project, the forums will be a better means of communications http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=383655 * Mailing list - in the future, I hope not to spam all of you with this type of message so please sign up for the mailing list if you are interested. As time goes on, most of these things will probably be covered in the forums but the mailing list is a good tool for me to contact all of you if you are still interested http://sourceforge.net/mail/?group_id=112044 * CVS source access - If you need help setting up cvs or getting the project running, just post a message in the forums and we should be able to help you Other items of interest: * Mahendra is working on the first draft of the FAQ that will be available soon. It should help answer a number of questions that you may have, but feel free to post any you want answered. Background on myself (for the curious): * I'm a senior software developer from Holland, MI, USA. I have about 8 years experience in Java with a broad spectrum of java technologies. My industry exposure is mostly supply chain related with a lot of database and web interface development using ejb's. If you really want to know more about me you can check out my wife's website at http://radiantphoto.fotopages.com/. There is probably a picture of me doing something stupid in there somewhere :) Thank you all for your interest! -Nick P.S. If you don't want to get any more mailings from me, just reply to this e-mail with the words "shut up" in the message and you won't hear from me again. ;) |
