Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Hi all, I've created a branch tagged "v1_1" for all new features which we going to implement in the next version. I suggest to use the main branch to bugfixing only and preparation of the v1.0 final release. I only think - what we have to do with the Events panel in the current version: is it better to take it away (and move events management into the Agenda panel) or leave it unchanged? -- Best regards, Alex V. Dear subscribers, Please be careful - our project's mailing lists is under the viruses attack! If you've got the emails with subjects something like as "Jjdxcmijvxhcqt" or "hi" contained a ZIP file attachment, DO NOT OPEN THESE ATTACHMENTS AND KILL THESE POSTS IMMEDIATELY. These attachments contains the viruses those unfortunately have passed through SF.NET filters :-( Wishing health to your systems. -- Best regards, Alex V. Alishevskikh al...@op... Hi all, Regarding print support (request 862151): Sure, printing is a necessary feature and I was going to implement it (at least at notes editor), but.. I found that it is a freaking pain in the ass. The problem is that I've not found the standard Java API functions to page a content of printing. As far as I could learn, the only way to print a multipage content of JTextComponent is to get a whole Graphics2D object and split it somehow into pages considering output page format, margins etc. It would be great if somebody knew an easy way to print multipaged HTML documents from JEditorPane, or some open-source library for that. -- Best regards, Alex V. Dear subscribers, First of all, I wanted to announce that the jNotes2 project is renamed to Memoranda and moved to http://sf.net/projects/memoranda. The old SF project (http://sf.net/projects/jnotes) is kept as a home of jNotes version 1.0 (currently inactive). The jNotes 2.0-alpha is renamed to Memoranda 1.0-alpha. NEW PROJECT HOMEPAGE -------------------- The new homepage address is http://memoranda.sf.net (currently under construction). NEW MAILING LISTS ----------------- There are two new mailing lists: * mem...@li... - main project discussion list. * mem...@li... - mailing list for announcements about software updates only (very low traffic) I am strongly recommend to subscribe to one of (or both) these lists instead of the old one (jno...@li...). I will post my messages to both (old and new) lists for some nearest time, but I hope to move the discussion to new lists as soon as it possible. Hi all, Patrick Bielen wrote: >But the migration and the memoranda name-change is ok for me. Well, we have +1 three times without vetoes that is enough for "lazy consensus" in Apache terms :-). We've got the new name of jNotes: MEMORANDA. Great! IMHO, the really nice name because it exactly reflects the problem domain and just sounds fine (something epical, isn't it?) Hi all, In first, I am glad to say that the project activity grows extremely fast and I am not a single developer anymore. Patrick Bielen <bi...@st...> has joined to project and actively works on jNotes now. And I hope that there are more developers will join us soon, because the project is going to be more and more popular. We had 235 downloads at August (the lifetime monthly record) and already have 185 downloads for a half of September. Well, the development of jNotes2 is sped up and my JMHO is that we can drop out the damned "Alpha status" soon. Recently we have done a few big improvements - we've implemented the tools of control over the app (system tray icon), have fixed the I18N problems and a lot of the bugs. In addition, we've got five national localizations. Many of these things would be impossible if not your help and contribution. Thanks a lot to everybody! Now I ask you to help to make a decision. The fact is that the jNotes 1.0 and jNotes2 are quite different software. And we have to change the name, because there is annoying tangle with another software that called "jNotes" or "JNotes" (some Java stuff related with Lotus Notes). As SourceForge has not a way to rename a project completely, except for start a new one, we have to migrate to a new project. There are questions that I want to discuss: 1) Would migration promote the further project development? 2) There are some variants of project name: - InteliNotes - Notestopia - Memoranda - LineUp - Jot - NoteSoup - MyNotes - NoteBurn - Jilofax - Chronicles - ... oh no, "jNotes" forever! - ... your variant ... My vote is +1 for migration and +1 for "Memoranda" (thanks to Ivan!). Looking forward to your opinions. -- Best regards, Alex V. Hi All, After working 3 weeks with the jNotes2 application i found myself always maximizing the screen after the app was loaded. So now my question is... isn't it better to give the app fullscreen- mode as default ? A lot of things look better that way, and specially on the html-editor that contains two listboxes to choose the style of the font and paragraph. I saw the setExtendedState(frame.MAXIMIZED_BOTH); existed but was commented out in the source-code. Can somebody explain me why ? At least i imagine why that is, because if you uncomment that statement, the build of the screen is ugly, i really have no idea why, but i think it's because it has to go from the 800*500 size tot he fullscreenmode, not sure about that. Anyway your feedback is appreciated. Hi Alex, Congratulations with the new alpha version of jnotes2, it just works great. Okay, now for the changements... Is it possible to move the events (called agenda in the dutch version), on top of the list on the left pane ? so that it is almost identically to Outlook and users feel comfortable right away. Next, about the new features... The popping of the dialog when an event occours works great now, but it should be nice when the user has the option to dismiss the event for a while like outlook does, so that it will popup again after let's say 15 minutes, and when clicked on ok it does not popup anymore, so just one new button with the "Delay" tekst should be just fine. So the button increases the event with 15 mins. Ofcourse i understand jnotes was never created to replace outlook, but anyway it could do that, so the only missing feature is maybe the option to edit your windows (or linux) adressbook ??? Cause outlook express is included in every freaking windoze-version, there is ofcourse no need to add mail-features, but adress-book features would be nice, expecially when you must look for a telephone number or adress or whatever :-) For windows that should be easy, but for linux that could become a really pain in the ass, cause there are so many addressbook apps for linux, not funny anymore :-) If this last feature is implented i can finally drop Outlook to the trashcan and completely use Jnotes2 :-) Well dude, you did a great job, and i'm proud to be a member and being helpfull for the project. Best Regards, Patrick |

Hi all, Patrick Bielen <bi...@st...> wrotes: >However i'm wondering when we finally get that system-tray-icon >for windows in java also, i really miss that feature. Patrick has found a cool thing: SysTray for Java (http://www.eikon.tum.de/~tamas/) that allows java apps to interact with system tray on Windows and KDE. It has a clean license (LGPL) and I believe we can now implement a convenient and habitual way to control jNotes with system tray icon. I imagine it as the following: 1) User launches jNotes first time: * Application window is opened * jNotes icon is appeared in system tray * jNotes systray menu (opens by right-click on systray icon) is "Minimize | Exit" 2) User closes the jNotes window or selects "File->Minimize" in main menu or selects "Minimize" in systray menu : * Window is closed, but jNotes is still active in system tray * jNotes systray menu is "Restore | Exit" 3) User launches jNotes repeatedly, or left-click on system tray icon, or select "Restore" in systray menu: * If the application window is opened, it moves to top. * If it is closed, it is restored 4) User selects "File->Exit" in main menu or "Exit" in icon menu: Application goes to shutdown. Also I think that it is a good idea to make a launching mode customizable (in preferences) to allow the user to select whether jNotes should launches normal or minimized at first time. On platforms that are not supported by SysTray for Java (e.g. MacOS) the scenario may be like as in my previous letter. Best regards, Alex V. Hi Guys, Sorry but the exit-bug was not a bug. Only the daemon-feature (dialog to ask to exit or run daemon) is however not implented yet, so for now if you want to completely shutdown jnotes use the file - exit menu to exit the application. Best Regards, Patrick |

Hi Alex, It must be possible to let the build.xml file create a jar instead of the build-dir with all its classes right ? Don't you think that'll be easier to distribute the application ? And then create another zip that the user must unzip into the jnotes dir ? So a dependency.zip that holds the lib dir and all the needed dependencies ? Or are we going to develop an installer for it ? Just give your feedback. Best Regards, Patrick |

Hi guys, I added the EXIT_ON_CLOSE method to force jnotes to close the application after the app main-window is closed. Ofcourse we have to rewrite this because normally the app should continue to run in daemon-mode after you close the main-window, but for now it is fixed. Best Regards, Patrick |

Hi alex and other developers, There is a bug when closing jNotes. When i call jNotes from the console (dos-box on windowsXP) and i close the app then it hangs and doesn't terminates as it has to be, so i have to force the killing of the bat-file. This results in unwanted results, because it doesn't frees all the recourses, which results in the wrong behaviour when you change the source-code and recompile it, the changes are for some or other reason not recognized by the jvm. Only after a full reboot of my system the changes are recognized and pushed into the app. This is very weird, so maybe we could better use the EXIT_ON_CLOSE method instead of the default DISPOSE_ON_CLOSE method to force the jvm to free its recourses and memory. The way it works now i always have to log out from windows and login again to make the changes active, and that is not the way it should be. First i thought it was a bug, until i saw the app freeze when i ranned it from the console, linux-users please check this out. My system : WindowsXP Professional SP1 J2SDK 1.4.2 (from Sun) Best Regards, Patrick |

Hi Alex and other developers, Maybe it's better to change the behaviour of the priority keywords and replace them with numbers ranging from 1 to 5 as in outlook. 1 is highest and 5 is lowest... The reason is simple... if you want to sort on priority (which i always use) then the sort is going completely wrong, cause it is going to sort on the string... so Low comes before Lowest instead of before normal like it should be. So using string is not a good option here. So we better can use 1 to 5 to give the priority to the task. Do you agree with that ? Best Regards, Patrick |

Hi all, As you could notice, the launching and "daemon mode" of jNotes2 is still very clumsy and of course, requires a further development. It has a following problems: 1) There is no obvious and convenient way to switch between 'normal' and 'daemon' modes 2) An user can launch a number of jNotes instances ('normal' or 'daemons'). This is bad, because if you change the events in one instance, then other instances do not get these changes. Most likely, this is only one of many possible conflicts. jNotes should have only one instance started in a given time (as many applications, i.e. e-mail clients) Willy Dobe <wd...@gm...> has ideas on how to improve jNotes launching and modes switching. Willy wrotes: > I would like to be a bit more > precise and explain it with the following imaginary use case. > > I have created a shortcut to jNotes and dropped it on the application > pane. This launches jNotes in normal mode (non-demon mode) and the > taskbar looks like image2.png then. > When minimizing it the jNotes window hides itself completely and the > taskbar would look like image3.png. However, jNotes is still running and > pulls up reminder messages when due. > When double-clicking the shortcut again jNotes would check whether it is > already running and does not create a second instance of itself but > restores its window instead. I've introduced some additions in this scenario, because I had the following questions: 1) What if an user wish to completely unload (shutdown) jNotes? 2) What if an user wish to launch jNotes as 'daemon' in first (eg, at system startup)? So, my variant looks like this: 1) User launches jNotes first time with no options: Normal application window opens. 2) User launches jNotes first time with "-m" option (it may be another shortcut on user's desktop):jNotes launches in a 'daemon' mode. 3) User launches jNotes repeatedly (when it is already active): a) When it is active in 'normal mode', a window manager try to move the jNotes window to top (may be problematic on some platforms, e.g. ms-windows) b) When it is active in 'daemon mode', a window is restored (jNotes goes to 'normal mode') 4) User closes the jNotes window by 'Close'([x]) window button or by selection the 'File -> Minimize' menu item: The window is closed but jNotes is still active as a 'daemon' 5) User closes the jNotes window by selection the 'File -> Exit' menu item: jNotes goes to complete shutdown. Alternative way is to show a dialog box "Do you want to continue to monitor the events (Y/N)?" each time when user closes the window: YES - The window is closed but jNotes is still active as a 'daemon' NO - jNotes goes to complete shutdown A dialog box may contains a checkbox "Don't ask me again" to always close the window with going to 'daemon mode' without any questions. Or, this behavior may be customized in "Preferences" dialog. Looking forward to your opinions. -- Best regards, Alex V.
