If Java installed the 32 bit version Install test fails, but the JMRI programs run OK. If Java 64 bit only is installed Install test runs OK and JMRI programs also start OK.

I think our Install test should check for the JAVA we need to run JMRI, either 32 bit or 64 bit.

Walt, Do you have any output from the 32-bit version?
InstallTest uses a different launch procedure than other JMRI applications. As the initial tests for Java are run within a batch file, the exact Java found will depend on the environment within which the batch file itself is launched.
What happens if you execute InstallTest.bat from within a command prompt window?

    Matt:
    Learning to hate Win 8!
With just 32 bit java installed it fails if started from the "tiles" screen and from the Windows screen.
Finally found Command Prompt, under Start tiles and Search, really hidden!
Now how do I get it to run the install test.

Have not found how to turn on the Java console.

    They have changed everything

    Walt,
You'll need to navigate to the JMRI program directory:
    at a guess:
    C:\Users\user> cd C:\Program Files\JMRI
    or:
    C:\Users\user> cd C:\Program Files (x86)\JMRI

    Then run the InstallTest.bat:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\JMRI> InstallTest.bat

The above all assumes that Windows 8 hasn't changed things too much under the hood compared to Windows 7 & Vista

    Matt:
I don't have access to the 64 bit computer anymore. I was testing it for another user that was having trouble reading decoders.

When I drilled to the Jmri program C:Programs>JMRI>DemosAndTools and ran install test it failed if just 64 bit java was installed.

    Matt:
Sorry, last post was from memory, which can be faulty. It was in Programs (x86).

The updated InstallTest has been available in several JMRI development releases with the changes to function in both 32 bit and 64 bit environments.

Can this ticket now be closed?

    Matt
I can not get it to show the Java screen on a Win 8 ASUS laptop.
    what i tried:
Win 8 start screen then select Search, apps and click on the JMRI 'Install test". Nothing seems to happen. Nothing gets into the JMRI system console log.

This is going to be very hard to explain even how to run the install test.
