Miguel, > > (can't check on NS4.x as the servlet code doesn't work there). > >I saw that your servlet code did not work with NS47/Win32 That was wierd. The original servlet code a student borrowed from a Masters course example was OK on NS4.x. But when I altered it this summer so that I could allow the user to make several choices simultaneously I could never get beyond the first page without a servlet not find error. It was a choice between trying to find out why my servlet code did not work with one obsolete browser - something I had no idea how to approach - or press on with the work. I made an quick decision to abandon NS4.x support - if people are going to need to have javascript and chime or java installed, one can specify a browser cut-off too. Especially as the site is still experimental and the number of NS4 users will fall every year. This also made it easier to do the css without having to serve a separate stylesheet for NS4. I don't know what the statistics for NS4.x usage are - I don't think it shows any more - but even in Unis it is probably only sitting on old machines or on Unix boxes. David PS There are other wierdnesses with the servlet and browsers. I tried putting accessory files in directories relative to the servlet (as in the Sun examples) but some browsers couldn't find them, which is why I use absolute references to the .css and .js files. Again, I had limited time to work on the project during the summer and knew where it was important to put it. |
