We're in good shape here -- looks like the latest update to Java Runtime Environment 1.5 fixes the applet polling issue I observed. Whew! Except for the fact that applets fail to load (which is an expected behavior of the testcase), typing in to the URL window after display "about java" message has NO reversal and/or any problem at all.
