The term "strut" means "support" as in the short piece of metal attached diagonally on an aircraft wing to the body for support during flight. http://www.internetmodeler.com/1999/may/galleria/walkaround/kem99308.jpg
In Jmol this is a generally short bond-like piece that is thick enough to support a section of a protein in a plastic model created using rapid prototyping.
