Dear all, I have heard about the jmatlab project recently as an alternative to FreeMat and octave. From my understanding jmatlab has the best architecture, reusing powerful packages from the HPC world. I would like to contribute some image and video processing tools, but I am concerned about the legal basis of jmatlab. Please clarify the following questions, because I am reluctant to take part in a project with a fragile future: 1) Is jmatlab affiliated with Mathworks in some way? Afaik Matlab is a registered trademark. How can you use their name as title, and in your documentation? Do you have any statement from Mathworks on the choice of your name? 2) You may be aware of the legal case between Mathworks and National Instruments on the use of flow diagrams for representing mathematical algorithms (for example: http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~tlavian/spring2009/studentsPresentations/MathWorks%20vs.ppt). I see the same infringement with jsimulink. Is there no risk of running into the same trouble? Also Mathworks holds several patents on their software, some named on their homepage, some hidden. Did you have those checked? 3) You write that several jmatlab procedures were developed starting with octave code. Octave is licensed under the GPL. Then jmatlab needs to be licensed under GPL as well, and the jmatlab source code must be shared. I only see a link to an eclipse update site, probably distributing solely the class files without sources. I must say that I have not been able to try the download, because the www.jmatlab.org/update site doesn't work for me. Please neglect question 3), if you have already GPL'ed jmatlab. Don't misunderstand my questions. I am not to enforce any steps on this promising project. I only want to make sure that I am not running into trouble when participating. And I am afraid of the future of my possible contributions, in case the jmatlab project has to be closed for some funny legal reasons. I would like to see my contributions covered by GPL and hope for a positive answer. Once these questions are answered, and when I have successfully downloaded jmatlab and integrated my toolboxes, I'll be happy to contact you again and upload my tools if somebody is interested. Best regards Matt |

Hello I am trying to install jMATLAB on Eclipse 3.4.2, Mac OS X 10.5.7, and JVM 1.6.0. When I go to the preferences pane of jMATLAB, I get the following error: Unable to create the selected preference page. java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError Bad version number in .class file Since I am using Java 6, I suppose I shouldn't get this kind of error. Or maybe I am configuring Eclipse in the wrong way? I set JVM 1.6.0 in the Java>Installed JREs panel, and I also set JVM 6.0 as the system default JVM, so that the command java -version returns JVM 1.6.0_07-b06-153 in the terminal Thanks Giulio |

Hi, Could you please confirm that you are using the latest version of jdk. I might be able to help if you could send me the .log file found in .metadata folder. Hello, I am trying to install jMATLAB in a linux PC (Fedora 7) using the second install method suggested on your website and running into the following problem. Error: "No features found on the selected site(s). Choose a different site or category" [OK] Error: "An internal error occurred during Update Manager" I am using eclipse (3.2.2-15 for Fedora 7) and the following: eclipse-gef-sdk i386 3.2.1-4.fc7 fedora 1.2 M eclipse-ecj i386 1:3.2.2-15.fc7 updates 7.3 M eclipse-gef i386 3.2.1-4.fc7 fedora 2.2 M eclipse-platform i386 1:3.2.2-15.fc7 updates 30 M eclipse-rcp i386 1:3.2.2-15.fc7 updates 14 M Then, I was able to install it with a workaround, but when I go to JMatlab Preferences I get: # Error: "Unable to create the selected preference page. # Reason: # Plug-in org.jmatlab.platform was uanble to load class # org.jmatlab.platform.preferences.JMatlabPreferencePage" I realize your website alludes to jMATLAB being developed and supported on Windows, but any pointers or suggestions you have will be very much appreciated! If I get it working under Fedora 7, I am willing to share my installation steps for the benefit of others. Thank you. JMB |

Hi, I am newbe to jmatlab and have a qusetion. When I follwow the instructions on - http://www.jmatlab.org/workbench.html - I find... ...Say you want to work on calculus, right click on Interpreter folder and create a simple file "calculus.i". This will open an another interpreter window in the center of the perspective ... or later on ...Right-click on the "Source" folder in the navigator view, and create a simple file "sqr.m"... Both things just do not work. If I right click on the interpreter / source folder, there is no option to create a file XYZ.i or XYZ.m. What did I do wrong? I am using: Eclipse SDK Version: 3.3.1.1 Build id: M20071023-1652 Thanks for your help! Hi Ali, thank you, the problem is now fixed. I used to have Java 6 as default environment but it seems that during some system update my default JRE was reset to Java 1.4. Hi, New build is availble. Point your update manager to following URL http://www.jmatlab.org/update This release adds fprintf and resolves the gnuplot file name problem. Your feedback will be highly appreciated. Regards, Ali |

Hi, As per your advice, I removed the check for the file name. The change will be available in next build in a few days. I am glad that you not only identified the problem but also came up with a solution. I hope you will continue to provide your feedback. Hi, I did not test it with linux. On windows you will go the eclipse menu Windows -> Preferences then select "jmatlab preferences". It will show you the screen to modify the path to the file. Unfortunately, at this point it is expecting a particular name of the file so it might not accept it on linux. Could you please try and let me know if you got it work. Regards, -Ali |

Hi to =BFall? I don't know if there is somebody reading this. I am testing jMatlab in a redhat linux distribution, and i have experimented some problems installing gnuplot utility. It checks that the name of the file ends with ".exe" but i= n linux that does not happen. I have solved creating a symbolic link named gnuplot.exe pointing to the correct executable file. I would like to know in which preferences text file this information is written (to modify it by hand) or if this problem will be solved early. Thanks for all. JBWeeN |
