#16 Compiled extensions?

I don't know if it is feasible or if it would be worth
the work but I read mention that it is possible to
write extensions to PHP in order to get fast
performance for critical functions. For one, I could
see writing my own platform independent unpack
function. The source material for this kind of project
is the ZEND API Documentation. I don't know if I will
move on it, but I will think about it.

If I do, it would seem necessary to still provide the
capability to run without the extension.
