As I'm about to embark on writing a CAP Server as part of JiCal, I'd love to know if there is any interest out there.

CAP servers are a new protocol still at development stage in the IETF. Look for http://www.calsch.org/

Essentially they enable a common protocol for delivery of your icalendar from a server rather than local store or file store. They include all levels of authentication and SQLish like calls. This means that once evolution and like products are altered to talk to the server, there is absolutely no need for Microsoft Exchange. We've already got superior email facilities open sourced, this would replace the calendar server bit.
