Indeed, this seems to be exactly the methodology followed by JUNG: http://jung.sourceforge.net/doc/api/edu/uci/ics/jung/random/generators/SimpleRandomGenerator.html Speaking of which they have a number of random grpah generators, but don't use a single backing interface. Perhaps I'll give them a shot...
