  Ok, I was able to reproduce this. I never tried to use _slices_ on md
disks before, but I remember that this code used to work just fine on my
IDE disk slices. Now it fails, so I will have to look in more detail
when I have time.

Old method is not affected in any way. May be you should be using it for
now?
