#271 jfsCommit using 100% CPU

When creating a very large file (using amanda backup) jfsCommit CPU usage reaches a continuous 100% until the amanda backup is terminated. The file growth slows to a crawl. This is consistently reproduceable and has happened each of tree times I have tried it.

I am running:

. Linux 2.6.28-gentoo-r2 #1 SMP Thu Mar 5 07:41:56 MST 2009 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) III CPU
. jfsutils-1.1.13
. on a brand new JFS filesystem build.
. filesystem is 13TB
. file produced is 800GB at the tile jfsCommit reaches 100%.

I am not sure at what file size the problem begins, but jfsCommit starts out a 0% - 2% at the beginning. Running "jfs_fsck -v -n" on the mounted filesystem with jfsCommit at 100% follows. This is only the first 100 lines, as it repeats thousands of times until I kill the fsck:

    Results of running fsck.jfs after killing amanda and unmounting the filesystem. Amanda was not getting anywhere.

    Can you "echo t > /proc/sysrq-trigger" when jfsCommit is chewing up the cpu, then send me the dmesg output (at least the part relevant to jfsCommit)?

    (Note: the 2.6.29 kernel will have /proc/<pid>/stack. That will be nice.)

    The problem found by fsck.jfs (after unmounting) is interesting, but it doesn't look like it would be related to the jfsCommit problem.

    ... and I don't know of a way to edit submissions

    Can you tell me what the prospects are for fixing this?
    I am stuck at the moment unless I abandon JFS for an
    alternative filesystem. I would prefer to keep using JFS
    but need to know what king of time frame is likely for
    a fix.

    Is there any additional feedback I can provide?

    I actually just posted about this same issue on jfs-discussion as I didn't see anything when I did a search. I just thought I would add I have this exact same problem and run into it a lot quicker (usually after writing files that are getting 30+GB). A guess of a possible cause is fragmentation since it seems to do it worse on files that are written and are more fragmented.

    Also maybe the length of time/size of write required before this issue surfaces has to do with the write speed? I know I can writes files at 600-700 MB/sec but it seemed to not creep up as often/soon when writing at much slower speeds.

    I really have no clue what causes it so I am just guessing here.
