Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

New Page 1JESRoundup DOC:2003/NWS01 Reg Date: 27th May,2003 Hi Everyone It has been quite a while sinceour last known activity (in-activity). Meanwhile JES progressed from no-where tono-where, with most of the members preferring hibernation. We had few more enthusiasticsouls getting them selves enlisted for JES. Chris Le Grand volunteeredhimself to fill in the role of the Grid Specialist. That's when I got into theact and shooed him away with my ignorance. Other new members are Raghu ,he volunteered to pick up the role as project admin ,configuration anddeployment manager and Lukasz Lechert volunteered to be Javadesigner/developer. Meanwhile I tried getting my selflittle educated over grid technologies specially Globus,OGSI and OGSA. AsI progressed, my confusion peaked. The Technical Scope/Vision for the productstill remains as hazy as it had began. I would be need some time & help to consummatethe voluminous amount of documentation and specification available on GridComputing. I tasked my self to come with a Technical Evaluation Report on GlobusToolkit. Now for the better part, I had fewdiscussions with Shailesh (member of JES), who is currently doing somespade work on Globus toolkit. We though it would be wise to start work on fewsub-component, which we would need and are also the foundation components from aoverall solution perspective (Mud Slinging as James Gosling calls it). Thiswould give us more time to formulate a vision/requirement on the core part (DiamondCutting). We are proposing two sub-projects(JESAS & JESGDM), as part of the plan forward, Please let me know, if youhave any contentions on the approach adopted. we had arrived upon the initialdraft of the requirements for proposed sub-projects, you can find them posed onthe site and brief note on these sub-project below. Finally, I request you all tovolunteer for leading & being part of these sub-projects. I would beinitially be part of these sub-projects, helping the project to take-off. Iwould be working with Raghu and some of you folks in establishing thedevelopment/design/process guidelines. --------------------------------- JES-AS (JESApplication Scheduler) The Sub-Component would beresponsible from application level scheduling functionality. This componentwould include formulation of Job Definition and Control Language based on XML(Similar to JCL in Mainframes). Please find the copy of therequirements at http://jes.sourceforge.net/docs/RVD-AppScheduler.doc JES-GDM(Grid Deployment Manager) One of the biggest problem withdistributed and parallel computing models is in the areas ofdeployment/installation. Take the instance of Globus toolkit- Globus is kind ofstatic model in terms of services offered by a grid. In order for the grid tooffer new services/enhance/maintain existing services, a automateddeployment/installation toolset is required, in absentia, it would turn out tobe a nightmare for administrators/developers. I personally feel. The gridtechnology would not take off the way it needs to, if this problem remainsunsolved. JES-GDM would be aim in buildingthis generic toolset for distributed deployments in server farms/clusters/grids. JES-GDM aims at leveragingexisting technologies like Apache's ANT, Guaranteed IP Multicasting ,RMI, Web Servicesetc. Currently first draft of therequirement is ready and shall be soon published for your reviews and comments --------------------------------- Admin Activities Current Members : 7 (AtluriSatish,Shailesh,Chris,Eric Wong,Raghu,Saritha,Lukasz Lechert) Create two sub-projects -JESAS and JESGDM Update the Homepage with FAQand GRID Computing References (http://jes.sourceforge.net) Create new user forums forrequirement discussion Update WebSite with JES-ASRequirements Document --------------------------------- Once I again, I request you all toactively participate in JES activities, I would like re-iterate everybody is anaive & novice with respect to Grid Computing like every body else is. Weneed to make it happen collectively. bye Satish Atluri JES - Project Admin --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! DSL - Now only $29.95 per month! |
