Category: text area and syntax packages Group: minor bug Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 1 Submitted By: tkteun (tkteun) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Annoying behaviour editor Initial Comment: The feature of storing the horizontal cursor position (even if the line breaks earlier) is great, but it should be disabled on selecting text. To explain: example: 1: text1text2text3. 2: . 3: text9. where the dot is the jEdit break marker. When the cursor is on line 1 char 5: "1" and I'm going down, the cursor goes to line 2 char 1 and then line 3 char 5 "9". This is really great!! But. When I'm on line 1 char 5 and I go down to line 2 char 1 and then do Shift+Down I select line 2 char 1 to line 3 char 5. This is really annoying me, it should be, in my opinion, line 2 char 1 to line 2 char 1 I hope this is easy fixable, if it isn't, DON'T BOTHER!!! well, thanks, TK ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: R York (yorkrj) Date: 2006-02-22 09:28 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1458716 The behavior described in this bug report sounds pretty normal to me too. This should be closed since this is more of a feature request/debate than an actual bug. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Björn Kautler (vampire0) Date: 2005-11-18 14:34 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=918212 This behaviour is in all programs I know the same and that what I expect if the position is saved. To work with this behaviour is a simple matter of familiarisation. And jEdit is too a community-driven project. So if most users find that the behaviour is ok, then there is really no need to change it. And because of all other apps with that feature behave the same way, it is good to keep it for users that switch from another program to jedit. I only stated my opinion about your request which is besides wrong here, because it is a feature-request and not a bug-report. A feature-request should be posted to the mailing-list. And if you aren't able to accept my opinion, then ignore it, but don't come on to me like that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Aaron Hamid (aaron) Date: 2005-11-18 13:39 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1290 I tried your example (windows jEdit 4.2final). I see what you mean, but isn't it the case that if you DID want to select up to the stored horizontal position, that changing this behavior would "break" that, and you would then have to do {Shift+Right} {Shift+Right} {Shift+Right}? Also, I don't see what the mouse, or step #2, has to do with any of this. Using Ctrl to select words may be helpful. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: tkteun (tkteun) Date: 2005-11-18 13:17 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1094407 Well, first off: I said I find it annoying. second: Maybe I've used a rather simplified example... but for all readers curently on a caffeine buzz: 1: text1text2text3. 2: . 3: text9. 4: . 5: blablablablabalhail4uhtrjkafklbaljkejklhfnmbjkl. 6: . 7: dff. 8: text666. 9: . Okay, I hope you're still on coffee to get this one: I'm coming from line 1 char 7 (e) {Down} to line 2 char 1 {Down} line 3 char 5 (9) {Down} line 4 char 1 {Down} line 5 char 7 (b) {Down} line 6 char 1 {Down} line 7 char 3 (after f) now I want to select "tex" currently I have to: - grab my mouse (we all hate that) - push {Left} once and then {Right} once (too much and I keep forgetting that (I'm from a marijuana legalised country)) - push {Shift+Down}, {Shift+Left}, {Shift+Left}, {Shift+Left} (That's definetly too much and that's exactly what I keep ending up doing So I want to be able to just push: {Shift+Down} while jEdit just forget's my position this one time... Now there are exactly two answers I'll accept (and they'll both have to be from a project developer) - No, my time is too precious (but I'll put it on a todo list and maybe we'll look into it) or - Okay, fixed and the one answer I too can live with is: We did that on purpose so we can annoy you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Björn Kautler (vampire0) Date: 2005-11-18 09:18 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=918212 For me this behaviour seems to be perfectly correct. And btw., why don't you press simply Shift+Right while at line 2 char 1? Then you are at line 3 char 1. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=100588&aid=1359999&group_id=588 |
