I think 64m is the default. I had the same issue with 4.3, then remembered with 4.2 I had added 128m in the jEdit launcher (Windows) and to the KDE shortcut (Linux). With 4.3 on Windows, I'm starting jEdit with a direct call to java, adding -mx128m makes all the difference.
