OK, a brief update: I've been exchanging email with Brian on the launcher, and he came up with a really simple registry widget to avoid us needing a big COM hairball DLL to do right click integration. I've also started experimenting with gcj, to do compiles of Java down to a native Windows EXE. I think it should be possible to do a first cut of something that comes up, and tries to contact a running instance of JEdit with the file to be loaded. If JEdit isn't already up, it just launches it. The very first cuts would not have a pretty GUI front end for setting the launch parms. These would likely be picked up from a text file that could be edited. Eventually, a UI for configuration would be added. The reader should be forewarned that the first revs of this will be beefy. For simplicity, I've been doing static links of the gcj executable, and a "Hello, world" weighs in at 2 MB. This can be slimmed down, of course, and even at this weight, should provide a useful proof of concept and provide grist for the discussion mill. So, anybody who's interested, please speak up here or on the wiki list. Regards, whorfin |
