I agree. I think the existing one is fine.. BTW, You will never get agreement on this type of item. Getting agreement on usability features in jEdit is one thing because most are configurable. How about write a splash plugin to select your fav graphic. Is it worth it? Not for me. tom thats my 2cents "Jeremy Wadsack" <jwa...@wa...> on 05/16/2001 07:44:54 AM Please respond to jed...@li... While this splash screen may have some "neat" effects and such, from a functional design perspective it doesn't give much. Without going into details (to spare the original artist) I would also like to see several options before selecting this one. Just my $0.02, but I agree that jEdit could use a new splash screen to snazz things up a bit, however, no offense, but I don't think the one proposed is the one. Perhaps an updated version might do. But, again, IMHO, I think the splash screen should have SOMETHING to do with the app it is representing. Keep that in mind if you are planning on making one. -c -----Original Message----- From: Dirk Moebius [mailto:dmo...@gm...] Sent: Wednesday, May 16, 2001 11:55 AM To: jed...@li... Come on... the whole jEdit is full of functional design! I love the idea of contrasting this with some emotional effect, you know, like the Gimp splash screen ("the road to stability" - I laughed my ass of when I saw it the first time - it's hard to top that one!) or Seti@home... guess why Seti@home is so successful?!? No, not the splash screen. It's an emotional piece of software. Hey, creatively inclined jEdit users --- what do you think? Please support Dave. > Perhaps an updated version might do. But, again, IMHO, actually, this is a good idea. i'm not sure i'm totally in love with the one that i submitted to the mailing list. i like most of it completely, but i'll update it in the next couple days and it should look even better. for those of you that like it in its current form, don't worry, i'll keep the same feel, this will be just a touch up. ps. i already have an idea for the progress bar, but is ok if it isn't a defualt java progress bar, but a (simple) graphically updating one? later, -dave |

If the image really bothers you, you could simply create a new image, name it jedit_logo.gif and use it to replace the one in the jedit jar file. -----Original Message----- From: jed...@li... begin tom...@ac... quotation: > How about write a splash plugin to select your fav graphic. Is it > worth it? Not for me. since the splash screen is loaded really early in the jEdit initialization, a plugin cannot effect its behavior directly at run-time (the splash screen is loaded before doing anything that can potentially take a long time, e.g. loading plugins). the only way to change this behavior is to change the jedit_logo.gif file inside of jedit.jar. i don't think that a plugin that replaced files in the main JAR file would be a good idea. -md |

That's what the dictator is for. I am not completely opposed to the idea of a new splash screen. If anyone wants to try their hand at a new one, go ahead. I just haven't liked any of the ones so far.
