Most INI file readers support both ';' and '#' as a comment line marker. The ini mode in jEdit 3.1 is still missing the '#'. This line fixes it (I added it after line 16 in my modes/ini.xml -- Jeremy Wadsack Wadsack-Allen Digital Group |

I usually just want to remember my current location while I go jump to another part of my code. I think the markers haveing labels are only useful if you want to set a mark that's semi-permanent. If there was an ability to add or remove markers for the current line the cursor is on without bothering you for a name, I think it would work best for many situations, while having permanent named bookmarks would be good for others. > You also can't remove a marker with a keystroke. It would be nice to > have a 'remove current line's marker' menu item or something. I think > there's a macro floating around that does this. Yes, that was another suggestion I thought of, but forgot to write down. In TextPad, I usually bound a key, Ctrl-F2, to add or remove a bookmark for the current line and then F2 to cycle through bookmarks. I see the macro now.. it's call "Delete Marker at Caret". Now we need mouse commands. =) Daniel |

As I've said before, it works very well, and I have no desire to replace it. Anyone who wants more features can use jEditLauncher. I like being able to right-click any file or group of files into jEdit without doing anything to existing file associations, and you can send a whole directory of *.java files, for example, into the editor with one click. I also like being able to dump the output of a script file directly into my favorite text editor. In the earlier posts on this topic, we've been talking about a second option for installation that takes advantages of system-specific services (like rpm under Red Hat Linux). That's the kind of simplicity that most Windows users can appreciate. My own belief is that jEdit will be more popular with Windows users (especially those who don't like to hack) if installation and configuration can take place in a manner consistent with the Windows "look-and-feel". Hmm... yes that's what I'm looking for. Not sure how I missed that. =) After using it a for a few minutes, I do have some suggestions / feature requests. 1) Marks require a label. You can't set a mark without having to give it a label. Although, you can just not enter any text for the label, it makes it difficult to clear them later. This would be a moot point if you could clear the marker somehow by using the mouse. 2) If you don't give a marker a name, it should create an autoincremented generic marker name such as "Marker 1", "Marker 2", et. al. And it would be very nice if there was a global option to turn off the input box that asks for a marker name.. and instead just assign generic names for you... this would help make use of the mouse to set markers much easier. 2) Labels are only visbible if you hold the mouse over the bookmark. This is fine with me, but the the text says "Marker "foo" points to this line." instead of just the marker name. After the first time you read this text, it's no longer necessary and you are forced to "find" your marker name in the string of text. It seems inefficient. 3) There isn't a key shortcut or menu item to clear all markers. 4) You can't clear a specific marker without knowing it's name. 5) You can not set or remove marks with the mouse. My suggestion would be that if you click on the line number in the gutter a bookmark is created there.. click it again and it's automatically removed. Right clicking would open popup menu to clear, rename, etc. Thanks! Not to be picky...but would there be a way to disable this automatic native installation stuff? Having tried both, I like the simplicity of jEditOpener over the jEditLauncher. I don't need COM scriptability, etc., and I have been doing my own file association stuff for a long time...so it would be cool to be able to run the normal java install as I usually do, sans any native registration that I might already have done myself. As a start, you should look at the Markers feature (which you can access from the keyboard and address with macros). Perhaps what you're looking for is a mouse interface to that feature. Or is it something else? One thing that is really missing from jEdit are document bookmarks. Two applications that I used to use on windows (TextPad and HomeSite) allowed me to either click the line number in the gutter, or hit a keystroke to place a book mark at that point. Later on, I could jump back to the same point in the code by hitting a different keystroke. Anyway, this feature would be very appreciated! Daniel |

Hi Slava, I found jmk at sourceforge and compiled the source with the attached GUIUtilities.java and deleted the properties file but the window size problem still occurs. Once, the menu bar was painted over blue and you couldn't see the menu text but you could see the underlines for the shortcuts and the menus worked if you moved the mouse below the blue area. I'm not sure if this is related. I'm using Solaris at work and ist is not for trying other JVMs. I wanted to try IBMs . hi, I reconfigured X and jEdit window was wrong size, too big, so perhaps I'll do this too. Not that I plan to reconfigure X very often. regards michael crane > Can you try compiling the jEdit source, using the attached > source file instead of the stock GUIUtilities.java in jEdit > 3.1final? > > Delete your user properties file first, to get rid of the > invalid window sizes saved by the bug. > |

I think the Unix window sizing workaround is failing with this JDK (perhaps they fixed the bug the workaround is trying to work around)? Can you try compiling the jEdit source, using the attached source file instead of the stock GUIUtilities.java in jEdit 3.1final? Delete your user properties file first, to get rid of the invalid window sizes saved by the bug. "For installing"? I thought we decided that the Java-based installer should install the COM control, merge a .reg file, and also install an Windows uninstall tool. Slava |
