I've been playing with D2k5 and I'm not happy. Not sure whether it's because I keep overlooking something or because Borland really screwed things up. The problem is (once again) related to namespaces. Borland, in all their wisdom, have decided that the *exported* namespace to an assembly is not the entire unit name, but everything up to the last dot. IOW, all units in Jedi.Core.dll, Jedi.Graphics.dll, Jedi.Persistency.dll and Jedi.Strings.dll will end up in the Jedi namespace for any VS user, but continue to be in our the current namespaces (Jedi.System, Jedi.Drawing, Jedi.IO and Jedi.Strings). So, I thought, not a problem, since we can now assign multiple units to a single namespace. The section in the help says: <quote> Multiple units can be grouped together into one namespace using an extension of the in clause in the project source file. The file name string can list multiple unit source files in a semicolon-delimited list. uses MyProgram.MyNamespace in 'filepath/unit1.pas;otherpath/unit2.pas'; </quote> Now, I've tried it in a package, a program and a unit, but in each case I get a compiler error that the above path could not be found (it treats the entire thing as a single file specification, so it complains it can not find "filepath\unit1.pas;otherpath\unit2.dcuil"). I tried forward and backward slashed, but that didn't make any difference. So, other test: rename units "Jedi.System.Attributes.pas", "Jedi.Collections.InlineEditable.pas" and use that in Jedi.Core.dll. The assembly generates the Jedi.System and Jedi.Collections namespaces, which VS.NET can and will happily use. Next package in Delphi: Jedi.Text. I decided to add the Jedi.Strings unit to the Jedi.Core assembly as "Jedi.System.Strings". Now both the AttributeUtils and StringUtils classes reside in the Jedi.System namespace, for VS.NET that is. For Delphi, the two classes above reside in two different units (ie. two different uses clauses; this problem surfaces when I tried to build Jedi.Persistency which could not find Jedi.System.StringUtils). What the hell?? So I should put in the help file that the StringUtils class in the "Jedi.System" namespace, except for Delphi, where it will reside in the "Jedi.System.Strings" unit. That is ridiculous! So, is it just me? Did I overlook something important? HELP! -- Marcel Bestebroer (Team JEDI) http://delphi-jedi.org Project JEDI Help coordinator JEDI.NET team coordinator |

Instead of putting the HxS file somewhere, I've decided to put the MSDN style html help on line at http://jedidotnet.sf.net/help/index.html. In addition, I blatantly copied the web-site from the JVCL guys and adapted it to JEDI.NET (haven't finished all of the changes though). All, AFAICT, I have documented all current units, except for Jedi.System.IO.pas (but it already contains summary / parameter descriptions, so that won't take to much time). The reason I "ignored" that unit, is because I'm contemplating moving it into the Jedi.IO unit. I'm also contemplating forgetting about D8 and just move to D2k5, which would support namespaces consisting of multiple units. The end result of the assemblies would be the same, but at least we can keep units relatively small, regardless of how much classes are ending up in the same namespace. Hi all, just an update on the progress of today (if any of you would have subscribed to the jedidotnet-commits mailing list you'd already know, but I'm all by my lonesome on that mailing list): * the xml generation tool has undergone several bug fixes as I found out about them during: * wrote a lot of help texts. I'll see if I can temporarily park the HxS file (it's only 200 kB, or 167kB when zipped) somewhere so you can see the results of NDoc and a lot of typing ;). Hi all, I've been working on the documentation again yesterday, adding the new stuff and partially documented them. The skeleton generation tool had a nasty bug regarding nested types, for which the internal classes Delphi generates were not properly removed. In addition, the tool now accepts the <exclude /> tag as proper documentation (needed to exclude the strict protected constructor's of utility classes that will never be instantiated anyway). In the "tools/docs/ndoc patch" folder in CVS you'll find a patched ReflectionEngine.cs file for ndoc 1.3. It will accept the Borland packages (without throwing an exception every time), skip the standard methods Delphi inserts, as well as the Unit class and the internally generated meta classes. This allows ndoc to build a help file (finally!). Now I still need to look at the xslt files to see if I can add Object Pascal syntax generation. -- Marcel Bestebroer (Team JEDI) http://delphi-jedi.org Project JEDI Help coordinator JEDI.NET team coordinator |

Hi all, I've just added two new units and assemblies to CVS. One contains the StringUtils class with static methods to Quote/Dequote strings, expand tabs (using specified tabs and/or a tab width), repeat a specified string a number of times, remove duplicate characters (eg. 'This\\Folder' will be converted to 'This\Folder'), retrieve sections of a string (all before a specific delimiter, all after a delimiter, the last n characters). The other unit contains the Path class with static methods to handle paths strings, like combining an absolute path with a relative one to get a new absolute path. With the exception of the tab expansions, all methods where developed using the test driven development technique. I wrote the test cases for tab expansions after I wrote the code (and managed to remove quite a number of bugs that hadn't been apparent in the 'test' application I had used them in earlier). I've used Nunit 2.2.1 and the test cases have been added to CVS as well (in the 'main\nunit' folder). Nunit should be installed if you want to use those and can be found at http://nunit.sourceforge.net. I intend on writing test cases for at least all non-visual stuff (as these are easier to test in code) and I expect test cases for any donation from now on. Any comment and/or suggestions welcome (really, I seem to be the only one posting here!). BTW, anyone here available to make a (simple) web site for this project? I would appreciate that. -- Marcel Bestebroer (Team JEDI) http://delphi-jedi.org Project JEDI Help coordinator JEDI.NET team coordinator |

My bad; I forgot to add a reference to Jedi.Core to the solution, and that apparently caused the IDE to not find the TypeConverter and UITypeEditor used for inline collections. This also brought another issue to light: if a custom attribute for a declaration can not be found or causes an error, none of the attributes are applied. It is in reference to this important to understand that the use of the DefaultValue attribute with a Double-type value causes problems (in this case the BlinkInterval property had this problem, causing the Category and Description attributes to be missing as well). -- Marcel Bestebroer (Team JEDI) http://delphi-jedi.org Project JEDI Help coordinator JEDI.NET team coordinator |

All, > I also need someone with VS.NET access and check if this thing also works properly in that environment (it should, but I don't > have VS.NET and can therefore not test it). Trouble in paradise! The Led controls stuff does not work correctly in VS.NET: * The first issue is the auto-generated code for SingleLed.LedStyle. It generates 'this.SingleLed1.LedStyle = new SingleColorNormalLedStyle ...' which results in compiler error that the property, indexer, event cannot be accessed like that. Manually altering it to 'this.SingleLed1.set_LedStyle(new SingleColorNormalLedStyle ...)' does work. No idea what is causing this though. There are no custom CodeDomSerializers at work in this simple case, so it is generated by VS.NET/C# CodeDom itself. * Second issue: The VS.NET IDE does not show the collection items in it's PropertyGrid. It does work if I place a PropertyGrid control on the same form, build the project (after altering the above mentioned problem) and run it; I can simply add colors to the MultiColorNormalLedStyle from the property grid control on the form. Of course the latter I knew already since it did work from a Delphi test app as well. Question is why the VS.NET IDE property grid doesn't get them, whereas the Delphi Object Inspector does. Anyone capable of shedding some light and these problems? -- Marcel Bestebroer (Team JEDI) http://delphi-jedi.org Project JEDI Help coordinator JEDI.NET team coordinator |
