One of the big advantages I considered in the original
Norton Commander (which I did not find in any clone
afterwards) was th ability to plug-in a programme named
Quick View. Thereby I could have a VERY QUICK and
simple preview of all kinds of office documents .doc,
or .xls etc. in the second window (not only bitmaps
like jpg or bmp). Nowadays I would be even more happy
to have such a feature for the new open source
programmes like Open Office etc.
This would be something, which would make me a
permanent user of J-Commander!

Actually this feature does exist in Total Commander (Ctrl+Q
is the shortcut). This is indeed a useful feature and not
complicated to implement once this feature request is
completed: [ 1105827 ] File view window (F3) + basic editor
(external editor ?)

Basically text preview could already be implemented, but
documents preview isn't easy to implement at all. OpenOffice
preview would be awesome, yet I don't know of any Java tool
that could help us in getting a preview.
