It could be a good feature to have the file URL scanner to detect windows shortcut links and have it traverse them, similar to what symbolic links can do on unix plafforms.

The file format is described here : http://www.i2s-lab.com/Papers/The_Windows_Shortcut_File_Format.pdf

That would require to write a parser for this format and hook it in the scanner.
