What exactly do you mean with "another portal"?

Is the other portal running on a different node?
Or is it defined using another *-portal.xml?

In case of the latter, you should be able to do this, so I advice to recheck your configuration, pay special attention to the references.
In case of the former, this can be achieved using WSRP, which is planned for release 2.2, see http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBPORTAL-283.
