I'd say if it works on 1.4.0 then put it to HEAD.  HEAD is the less-critical 2.0.0 tree anyway.

Oh, it will definitely go in HEAD.  Just a matter of timing vis a vis Ben's refactoring work, not stepping on each other, etc.
