550 is usually a "relay" error, meaning that you can't send to a remote domain if the sender domain (from the HELO and/or FROM) is not local.  You would usually either allow relaying for authenticated clients, or ensure the sender domain is local (ie, corresponds to a local mailbox).

Just a guess though... not sure how to configure this in JBoss.

Check the settings for the DomainGroup MBean.  The domain specified in the FROM address of the email should be in that list.

the mail server is running, but access to send messages is denied. I suppose that I have to configure a user list for the mailserver somewhere, but I don't know where. 
Has anyone an idea?

Install JBMail using the installer.  One of the pages during the install gives you the option to specify the user/password.
