Assuming JBC is installed and configured correctly (see INSTALLING JBC, this forum) after a while - much longer on populated databases - there will appear a small screen with a login option called 'FIRST FOOTPRINT'. This is the one, and only account option as of this time. There are no passwords to log into this.

When logging in for the first time the first thing to do is:

    1. Go to HOMEBASE, and under the FILE tab, go to IMPORT/EXPORT, then EXPORT
    2. Click on the radio button for CATALOG NAMES
    3. Click OK and then name the file ALLCATALOGS.TAB, then SAVE it to your JBC EXPORTS directory.
    4. Go back to the EXPORT screen in #1
    5. Check BOOKS. UNCHECK THE CHANGED SINCE Box. Export ALL BOOKS, name it HOMEBASE.TXT and put it in the same place as the prior file.
    6. NOW ... IN JBC: Click on the CATALOG button
    7. Click on IMPORT
    8. Find and click on the ALLCATALOGS.TAB file. Load it. Wait a minute or so. The catalogs should show up in a numbered order.
    9. Go back to BOOKS.
    10. UNCHECK the box about numerical sequence.
    11. Go to IMPORT.
    12. Select Homebase type. Find and IMPORT the HOMEBASE.TXT file. This can take a LONG time, and a progress bar should appear.

When it completes the database records should appear in proper sequence with their SKUs and prices.
If there is any problems with this, please let us know.

When clicking on the individual listings it can take a moment or two for the listing to come up.

JBC at this point in its evolution is SLOW.

And not quite fast enough for production listing.

There are two methods to speed it up.

    1. Caching: Download the remote database on to the local machine and periodically update it in the background. It is not yet in development.

    2. Local database: Imagine if there was a very fast Java database, that exported and imported in Homebase format and had an unsurpassed search function with complex database manipulation abilities, as well as a clone of McBride's built into the Edition field. But it needed a more traditional database structure to enable networking. But at the same time had a structure that was ideal for scripting and parsing into a database such as JBC on the fly!

That database is called Cato Junior. It is available at www.bridgetownbooks.com - click on PROGRAMS at the bar.
Right now, the only thing keeping Cato jr. from being a complete multiplatform replacement for Homebase is that it does not have a Catalog Export function.
I have contacted its creator, Kevin Donaldson, for a possible fix to that.

JBC also has many other features such as its reports, and its abilities to export into eBay format. Much of these are largely untested, and will be explored either here or in the USING JBC/BOSC Forum.

that it does not have a Catalog Export function.

Just strip the Catalog info out of the database manually. :P

An export feature can be added if you ask nicely.
