I recently installed a hybrid version of BOSC17 based on osCommerce 2.3.4 and tested on both FreeBSD 10 and Linux Mint 17(Ubuntu 14.04). I had both running Apache 2.4 MPM Event, php 5 with php-fpm, and mysql 5.5. There was nothing wrong with my previous version of BOSC17(osCommerce 2.3.3 version). But since I had upgraded my os's, I found that the default versions of MySQl, in this case, version 5.5, were no longer compatible with osCommerce 2.3.3. I basically replaced the install folder from oscmmerce 2.3.4 with the install folder from BOSC17. Seems to work okay so far. osCommerce 2.3.4 now uses colorbox instead of fancybox, so if you've been wresting with getting popups to work out of the box with fancybox, 2.3.4 shouldn't be much of a problem. I was just getting used to fancybox though, so now, it looks like I'm going to have to bone up on colorbox and manually install some modules that came preinstalled with BOSC17(OsCommerce 2.3.3) such as theme switcher.
When testing OSC/BOSC it is best to use LAMPP/XAMPP from Apache Friends.
The version to use would depend on the offerings of your host provider.
Its very unlikely that most providers would ever dream of using the latest versions of apps.
I dont know about Ubuntu Mint, but Debian Mint is Testing which means the latest and greatest (mostly).
Personally I like testing web software with XAMPP on WinXP ince I hate dealing with permissions problems, and would rather leave that for last.
My main Debian machine is temporarily down so I cannt yet test the new release in Linux.
Some providers, like the Hostgator I use do allow for using multiple versions of MySQL and PHP.
My OSC 2.2 site is hobbling along, though I will hopefully be upgrading it this summer.
BOSC was designed so that the coupling to OSCommerce 2.3.3 was deliberately loose. The idea was that when inevitably OSC was upgraded, migration would, hopefully, not be too onerous. If you get a version working with 2.3.4 please add it to the website.
