It looks like eBay started using a different SSL certificate for signin. The CA for this certificate isn't in, for example, older cacerts files from the 1.4.2 java releases. It looks like the windows exectable is carrying around an older java runtime as are some older operating systems. I solved this personally by pulling in a cacerts from the last public build of 1.4.2.

I finally upgraded to the jre 1.6.0. Thanks a lot.
I appreciate your dedication to working on this brilliant software solution.

I find this very strange. I thought I had found the answer my login problems but they came back. I just tried something that may or may not make sense to anybody. I was running Firefox and was not able to log in all the time. I even had problems when trying to log in direct from the Ebay site.

I just changed my JB to open in the old Mozilla Suite which I used to run and no problems getting JB to log in. I have to wonder if it has something to do on my end with the way Firrefox handles cookies?

Where would one that is not very knowledgeable on this locate this jre 1.6.0 and what file would you download it to?

    Thanks

I downloaded the "Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6", which includes the 1.6.0 JRE (Java Runtime).

The link is this one, although I see there is a sessionid in it which may or may not work for you:
    https://sdlc2a.sun.com/ECom/EComActionServlet;jsessionid=9230EAB7D93C18B044A76BBE17B043F8

If the link above takes you to a login page, browse this way:
    1. http://www.sun.com/
    2. Hold the mouse over the white "Downloads" menu near the top
    3. Now click the menu item "Java 2 Standard Edition".
    4. On the page which is rendered, click the button "Download" within the span entitled "JDK 6"
    5. Now you can see the page with the URL I specified above.

If you are running Windows XP and have a fast DSL connection, you will want to download this version:
    Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jdk-6-windows-i586.exe 53.16 MB

After you have downloaded, double-click on the jdk-6-windows-i586.exe. This is a setup program which will assist you in installing your new JDK (and JRE). If you only want the JRE I am sure someone else can help you find only that.

Correction: a JRE-only download is also available on the page rendered in step 4 below.
There it is entitled "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6"

    Happy Sniping!

    Jag,

Thank you very much for your help and the step by step instructions. That seems to have taken care of that problem.
