That would be the problem.  4.1.3 is extremely old.  The newest 
"legacy" version is 4.1.8, and without the right upgrades it won't 
run on a modern system, i.e. one with ALSA 0.9 sound.  But, you've 
come to the right place.  Through not much fault of my own I have a 
version which runs on such newer systems.  I've been meaning to 
upload it to the jazzplusplus SourceForge page.  But, I just haven't 
had the chance to do that yet.  I'll keep your email in my inbox as a 
reminder to my self to get on that.
