I haven't kept up with sound card HW.  The last time I was doing this 
Creative Labs (http://us.creative.com/welcome.asp) and TurtleBeach 
(http://www.turtlebeach.com/) were the best "game in town", but don't 
trust that.  This might help (http://linux-sound.org/drivers.html).
