I though that was illustrating the latency problem.  Am I incorrect?

Hey Robert.  By default, the instructions walk you through a debug 
build.  At the configure step, remove the --enable-debug option and see 
if that helps.

Try the "Settings | Metronome..." dialog to change the sound used.
