I've checked the servers are still up, and they do exist - although they are rather slow and whether the file format is the same I don't know, I haven't been able to find anywhere else to get the data from though. The files from CVS compile successfully, although I haven't tried using them yet. It seems fairly easy to understand what's happening, even without documentation. I'll let you know if I manage to use the library in my project, and any changes that I make to it. -- Richard Kirkcaldy Ri...@Te... > -----Original Message----- > From: jav...@li... > [mailto:jav...@li...] On > Behalf Of Serge Knystautas > Sent: 23 May 2002 15:21 > To: jav...@li... > Subject: Re: [JavaWeather-developer] Status Report > > > Hi Richard! nice to see some traffic here. > > You'd have to check, but I think parsing should be working. > There isn't a lot of functionality in the project, and I'm > guessing the servers it's set to query aren't there anymore, > but what's in CVS should be functional. > > Serge Knystautas > Loki Technologies - Unstoppable Websites http://www.lokitech.com/ > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Richard Kirkcaldy" <ri...@te...> > To: <jav...@li...> > Sent: Thursday, May 23, 2002 10:21 AM > Subject: [JavaWeather-developer] Status Report > > > > Hi, > > From the look of the sourceforge pages, it looks like this project > > hasn't been updated for a long time. Hi Richard! nice to see some traffic here. You'd have to check, but I think parsing should be working. There isn't a lot of functionality in the project, and I'm guessing the servers it's set to query aren't there anymore, but what's in CVS should be functional. Hi, From the look of the sourceforge pages, it looks like this project hasn't been updated for a long time. I'm wanting to use the library in a project I'm working on, and I was wondering whether the javaweather libraries are in a usable state for development of other projects as they are - or will I need to work on the libraries themselves before using them? All I really need is the basics of getting the metar data, and parsing it - none of the city forecasts or unit conversions. -- Richard Kirkcaldy Ri...@Te... |

Bay, David, Vivek, Thank you for your interest in JavaWeather!! I didn't expect to get several people asking how they could help so quickly. Aside from being very busy with other stuff this past month, I've taken some time to try to organize the project better (with the code, using sourceforge more, and just general organization and direction), and I hope how you can help will become more clear. To learn more about what we are doing, I'd first suggest you check out the new web site at http://javaweather.sourceforge.net/. The todo section is of special interest. I've written up several tasks that need to be done here, and for the Perl script conversion and METAR decoding tasks, I made extra pages with some guidelines and more info on what needs to be done. I'm going to continue linking between the web site and sourceforge resources more, so I hope this becomes a useful and current resource. Frank Chiron has taken a first step towards converting the Perl scripts to Java that I mentioned in the job posting, but there's still plenty to be done. I'd encourage you to join the mailing lists on sourceforge if you're so inclined (I'm hoping we can start using the developer mailing list soon to archive project tasks). Please feel free to reply to me or to the group about what if any you'd like to do. Again, I really appreciate any of your time and code, and apologize for not having more time to work on things. I expect that for the foreseeable future, I'll probably be mostly managing the project by organizing code submissions, updating the web site, and otherwise trying to keep things moving forward. I'm also going to make some announcements on freshmeat and some other places once I have the latest build uploaded and marked in sourceforge as a release. Thanks again!
