But after building a functional Java program that has no errors during interpreting byte code in a JVM, I really assumed that after compiling it to native code it would be free of runtime errors. I am surprised and I wouldn't know where to begin. I read about gdb and cygwin and it looks like a mixture of linux and assembly language to me and based on what I can find it doesn't look promising if I go down that road. I can't see the end of the tunnel so I will give up at least for now. I'm going overseas for 2 weeks and may look into it again when I come back. Many thanks for your kind help.
