Hi, since I have no practical experience on the MAC platform, I can't help you on this issue. Have you thought about posting your question on the jython-list? Hi Dominique, I have no problems with non-ascii unicode-characters (like in the German ä). There have been reports on problems with the character-encoding settings of a Linux xterm. Make sure it fits with the version of X you are using. Hi, I have implemented a commandline application using the java-readline. However, there seems to be a problem with the character encoding on the input strings I get from the readline library. When I enter non-ascii unicode characters I get bad output. It works fine when I use the PureJava implemetation. Are there any known issues regarding this or am I doing something wrong? Any clues? Thanks, Torkel Dominique |

Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. With many thanks for your participation, Benno Luthiger PS: The results of the survey will be published under http://www.isu.unizh.ch/fuehrung/blprojects/FASD/. We have set up the mailing list fa...@we... for this study. Please see http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/mailinglist_en.html for registration to this mailing list. _______________________________________________________________________ Benno Luthiger Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich 8092 Zurich Mail: benno.luthiger(at)id.ethz.ch _______________________________________________________________________ |

Hi Jamie, do you start the ReadlineTest from the makefile? It will then read a private init-file from src/test/tinputrc, which cancels all initialization from ~/.inputrc. Try changing src/test/tinputrc, or start ReadlineTest without arguments (then it won't read the tinputrc). Maybe this helps. Please let me know your results. Bernhard > Hi. Hi. I've been trying to use the java readline package in a utility I'm writing. I'm having some trouble with the EMACS/vi editing modes. I'm using the ReadlineTest class that was included with the download. If I run the program without a ~/.inputrc file, it runs it EMACS mode as default. This works well. Also, if I want to switch to vi editing mode, I press ESC, and then Ctrl+j and I can use either vi or emacs (ESC-k or arrow keys). If I create the ~/.inputrc file with the line set editing-mode emacs , I get the same behaviour. The strange behaviour happens if I change ~/.inputrc to read set editing-mode vi . If I run java ReadlineTest then, EMACS doesn't work, vi doesn't work and the ESC-Ctrl-j keystroke doesn't switch. Many of my users already have the vi line in their ~/.inputrc file (for other programs), so command-line history will not work in my app for them. Does anyone know a way of making the app start up correctly in vi mode? Thanks! |

Hi Craig, the JavaGetline.dll in the contrib-directory is only created with cygwin, it should run without it. Can you reproduce your problem from a "normal" DOS-prompt (to be honest: I have not yet worked with XP, so I don't know if it still has a DOS-prompt). It might be possible that the DLL does not run under XP (the Visual C++ compiler is rather old). I have not yet managed to create a working DLL with cygwin, it should be possible but I can't figure out how. Hi, I'm trying to get libreadline-java-0.8.0 working on windows XP (pro) under cygwin. Unfortunately the JVM refuses to load JavaGetline.dll no matter where I install it. I've tried putting it in the current working directory, c:/WINDOWS and c:/WINDOWS/system32. Although the JVM can see it in all locations it fails to load it with the same error message "java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: ... JavaGetline.dll: Invalid access to memory location." Example error message generated by ReadlineTest program: [craig@acer:src]$ java -classpath ../libreadline-java.jar test.ReadlineTest dummy Getline java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: C:\WINDOWS\JavaGetline.dll: Invalid access to memory location at java.lang.ClassLoader$NativeLibrary.load(Native Method) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary0(ClassLoader.java:1560) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadLibrary(ClassLoader.java:1485) at java.lang.Runtime.loadLibrary0(Runtime.java:788) at java.lang.System.loadLibrary(System.java:834) at org.gnu.readline.Readline.load(Readline.java:133) at test.ReadlineTest.main(ReadlineTest.java:60) JVM : [craig@acer:classes]$ which java /cygdrive/c/j2sdk1.4.2/bin/java Any idea how to make the jvm load the dll? Do I need an XP version, or a version compiled to work with the 1.4.2 JVM? If so, is it possible to compile the dll with cygwin's gcc rather than Visual C++ (I read something about this topic in the mailing lists but wasn't sure what the answer was)? Craig. |

Hi Bob, you can define the completion char by binding the key to the=20 complete-function. This can be done from within Java or with an=20 initialization file. See the test-program for examples. But I'm not sur= e if=20 this works, since the completer is called by native code, which in turn m= ust=20 call native code to query the cursor-position, so wie have: java -> c -> java -> c I will try this in the next release. > If the word being completed is unique in the buffer, > it can be determined within the completer, but if the keyword is *not* > unique in the buffer, is there any way to tell? When the completer is called, is there any way to tell where the cursor is in the buffer? If the word being completed is unique in the buffer, it can be determined within the completer, but if the keyword is *not* unique in the buffer, is there any way to tell? - Bobman |

I've got a suggestion for a new feature: additional expansion characters. Currently, the completer is only called when a <tab> is hit. How about allowing the developer to specify which characters trigger the completer? I'm thinking the '?' would be a nice addition, since the shell I am trying to emulate uses that for inline help (different from keyword completion, which is provided by <tab>). - Bobman |

As it turns out, the problem was not in finding gnureadline; it was in finding libjavareadline. The example code discarded any exception thrown when trying to load the library. When I printed out the stack trace instead, I saw which library couldn't be loaded. Since I'm using Debian, 'libtermcap' wasn't installed by default, which is required by javaReadLine.so. Installing the 'libncurses5-dev' package fixed it. It works find now. - Bobman Bernhard Bablok wrote: >Hm, > >there must have been a change in the way the java-interpreter >searches for libraries. Hm, there must have been a change in the way the java-interpreter searches for libraries. Try setting the system-property java.library.path= : java -Djava.library.path=3D/lib \ -cp /usr/share/java/libreadline-java.jar:. CLITest Let me know if this works, so I can update the README. I think I've installed the java-readline package correctly, in that a simple test works with stdin. However, it can't seem to find the readline library. I have readline in my /lib directory (libreadline.so.4).
