I was thinking that this might be of interest to you.
After about a year of development the SIP Communicator project, a multi
protocol instant messenger and SIP soft phone, has finally made its very
first 1.0-alpha1 release (end of December). The release includes support
for MSN, Jabber, SIP calls (still unstable), and ICQ. More details on http://sip-communicator.org
We are happily using using Java-JML in order to provide support for MSN
and we are very satisfied with its simplicity, quality and reliability!
Thank you for contributing it to the community and keep up the
good work!
Cheers
Emil

>> Can I ask why you use Java-JML instead of the Jabber MSN gateways? Do you use ICQ via some Jabber gateway?
No - every protocol is with its implementation stack. No gateways are used!
I'm not so familiar with those gateways but do they support the protocol specific options. Like Full user details and all authorization options for adding a contact in the contact list these are from ICQ ?

I'am not so familiar with those XMPP gateways, that I could answer for this. I only know that the JAVA<->XMPP<->MSN was too immature at the point when I tested it. That's why I am using the Java JML library.
