Looking at configure in CVS, it seems that v1.38 fixed the problem with 
finding the version, but v1.32 removed the test that exposed the problem to 
begin with.  Since Debian unstable's gcj package only has libgcj-3.3.2.jar, 
not libgcj.jar, I don't think any version of configure after 1.32 will work 
with gcj on Debian.

I hate to point out a problem without sending along a patch or at least a 
suggestion, but since I don't know the motivation behind 1.32 (couldn't 
find any mention of it in the list archives from last year), I don't know 
what to say.
