Welcome to Linux and java-gnome 8-)

I would seriously recommend that you do not use the
code from cvs.  The bindings are currently going through
a major rework and are far from complete.  To get started
you could download the latest release.  

Please stay posted to this mailing list for updates on the
progress of the new release.
