The purpose is to make it easier to add other implementation packages
that do not depend on Swing. I'm hoping volunteers will help with this.
For example, I would like to see some or all of: a Jemacs package that
uses the Gnome2 text widgets (with Pango); one that uses the SWT toolkit
that is part of the Eclipse project; one that uses plain AWT; and one
that works on plain terminals."
