I would suggest working off of the java-gnome cvs instead of the 2.5.5 release. There are numerous fixes that have been included and this is also where the fun is ;) If you get the latest code it should also find the libgcj jar file. As far as your gtk/gnome environmen, you will need to stay very close to the gnome and gtk head.
