I've looked more, but not found a solution. Even if the garnome path is
searched first, gcc will find the headers in the system path for the
gnomeui widgets which have been removed. 

gcc has an option -nostdinc to make it stop searching standard include
paths. Unfortunately it then can't find lots of other things it does
need, which aren't in garnome.
