I think it is essential that we support gcj. I believe that the classpath project (the class library used by gcj) will have a release very shortly that will implement the majority of the 1.4 spec thanks to a large number of patches from IBM. I am not sure what version of the jdk is currently supported by gcj but this should be our minimum.
