Actually since the topic was mentioned I'm thinking about how to do that.
I even thought about patching the ubuntu package but it's not a good idea I
think.

Francisco's patch still works very well. It could be added to

Because it wouldn't benefit of the great java-gnome code generator. And it
would be very painful to develop. I'd like to see optional dependencies in
java-gnome so we can depend and build appindicator bindings *only*
appindicator is on the system
