Hi I'm currently working on improving the GStreamer Java-bindings, currently only in the cvs @ freedesktop.org. This has lead me to a rather serious issue with how types to callbacks are handled in java-gnome's GObject JNI-implementation. Here's a given situation where this problem arises. From gstelement.c in gstreamer: gst_element_signals[FOUND_TAG] =3D g_signal_new ("found-tag", G_TYPE_FROM_CLASS (klass), G_SIGNAL_RUN_LAST, G_STRUCT_OFFSET (GstElementClass, found_tag), NULL, NULL, gst_marshal_VOID__OBJECT_BOXED, G_TYPE_NONE, 2, GST_TYPE_ELEMENT, GST_TYPE_TAG_LIST); Connecting this signal to a method in Java will eventually result in the method getting called with two arguments, the first GST_TYPE_ELEMENT handled as G_TYPE_OBJECT, and the second GST_TYPE_TAG_LIST handled as G_TYPE_BOXED. The first argument, the G_TYPE_OBJECT one, is attempted translated by javatype_from_gtktype called by jg_signal_cb (which receives all callbacks) in org_gnu_glib_GObject.c (JNI).=20 However, javatype_from_gtktype does its translating work like this: if (strncmp(tmp, "Gtk", 3) =3D=3D 0) { if (strlen(tmp) > 3) tmp =3D &tmp[3]; sprintf(javatype, "org/gnu/gtk/%s", tmp); } which leads to GtkButton being translated to org/gnu/gtk/Button (skipping the first 3 characters and prefixing it with "org/gnu/gtk/"). So, for every new GType, like GStreamer's types, javatype_from_gtktype will either have to be updated (patched) or the class has to reside in the default package (so that the prefix like "org/gstreamer/" won't be needed). I consider both really bad solutions in the long term. So I ask, wouldn't it be possible to come up with some sort of static javatypeFromGtktype kind of method on all GObjects that could be overridden where such a translation would be needed? Or something similar... Cheers, Ole Andr=E9 |

Wrong assumption. There is no jni directory. The library is in the ../java-gnome/lib directory. Why does the Makefile refer to the jni/ directory? This looks like a bug. > You should add to your LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable the paths of your > lib*java*.so libraries. I tried with: export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/perm/develtools/java/3rdparty/java-gnome/lib The library is found, but I still find that I should not have to setup manually this library. The Makefile should take care of this and add its one -L directive automatically with the linker. > Hope this helps. Greetings. Newbie here. In java-gnome-2.7.4/libgtk-java, I perform: configure \ --prefix=/perm/develtools/java/3rdparty/java-gnome \ --without-gcj-compile That works fine and all the gtk files are installed: /perm/.../java-gnome/share/java/gtk2.4-2.4.3.jar /perm/.../java-gnome/share/java/gtk2.4.jar /perm/.../java-gnome/share/doc/libgtk-java /perm/.../java-gnome/share/doc/libgtk2.4-java /perm/.../java-gnome/lib/libgtkjava2.4.so.2.4.3 /perm/.../java-gnome/lib/libgtkjava2.4.so /perm/.../java-gnome/lib/pkgconfig /perm/.../java-gnome/lib/pkgconfig/gtk2-java.pc Now when I go to java-gnome-2.7.4/libgnome-java and do: export PKG_CONFIG_PATH=/perm/develtools/java/3rdparty/java-gnome/lib/pkgconfig configure \ --prefix=/perm/develtools/java/3rdparty/java-gnome \ --without-gcj-compile \ --libdir=/perm/develtools/java/3rdparty/java-gnome/lib When I compile, I get: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgtkjava2.4 I notice on the ld command that the path: /perm/develtools/java/3rdparty/java-gnome/lib/jni/ .. is wrong. The /jni/ should not be there. When I remove it, it goes further, but then I get the errors: jni/org_gnu_gnome_IconList.o(.text+0x3ff): In function `Java_org_gnu_gnome_IconList_gnome_1icon_1list_1select_1all': jni/org_gnu_gnome_IconList.c:278: undefined reference to `gnome_icon_list_select_all' jni/org_gnu_gnome_PasswordDialog.o(.text+0x274): In function `Java_org_gnu_gnome_PasswordDialog_gnome_1password_1dialog_1set_1show_1userpass_1buttons': jni/org_gnu_gnome_PasswordDialog.c:131: undefined reference to `gnome_password_dialog_set_show_userpass_buttons' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I can't get java-gnome compiled. Did anyone tried to compile it to different default directory? That should be supported. I do not want to install anything in the normal paths which is not installed with an RPM; tarball stuff downloaded is separate from my core system and I want it to remain like that. Thus I need to compile the libraries in a different directory than the default. Best regards, Hans Deragon -- Consultant en informatique/Software Consultant Deragon Informatique inc. Hello all, I have just downloaded the latest java-gnome bindings. I've extracted and installed all pre-requisites. I go into libgtk-java folder and run ./configure all goes well. When I do a make or make all it goes through and then fails complaining that it can't find jni.h which is in /usr/share/java/j2sdk1.4.2_05/include. Do I need to add this to my $PATH also? I've tried using CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/share/java/j2sdk1.4.2_05/include but that didnt help. Any more details needed on my end? Thank you! Lee |

Perhaps it could be useful for you to take a look at it, but you'll need to modify it since it matches our obsolete 0.8.x releases. Hi, I maintain the Debian packages. They are usually at least up to date with the latest stable java-gnome releases, sometimes they have backports from the development branches too. Occasionally I also package development releases in the experimental distribution, but this depends on the very latest developmental gnome releases also being packaged, which doesn't happen too often. (It also relies on me having time to set up an experimental chroot to do all this in). If there's anything you want adding, please let me know and I'll see what I can do. -- .''`. If you can't upgrade gtk to a recent version (2.4), maybe it's better if you try one of our releases of the past, like 0.8.3, which doesn't contain a lot of gtk-2.4 stuff, if I remember well. However our api is changed quite a lot, so I'd recommend to upgrade gtk and try our 2.6.x releases, if you have a chance. If you're developing, I'd recommend that you use jhbuild or garnome to bring in the bulk of the gnome development environment, and then develop against that.=20 Java-gnome, is, of course, a language binding, meaning that it's really just a layer on top of the underlying C libraries (a very well developed one, but a layer nonetheless). That implies, however, that there is a fairly tight dependency between the java-gnome bindings and the underlying versions of the gnome libraries. Java-gnome continues to evolve, so if you're developing against it, I recommend you use java-gnome from CVS (which, in turn, means, jhbuild or garnome to bring in gnome 2.7 into a private environment).=20 AfC Sydney --=20 Andrew Frederick Cowie OPERATIONAL DYNAMICS Operations Consultants and Infrastructure Engineers http://www.operationaldynamics.com/ |

Hi all, I have a question... I'm considering Java-GNOME to write the GUI for a small app but I need to know if I will be able to use it on Solaris/sparc as well as on Linux. Solaris comes with GTK 2.0. Should that be sufficient? Has anyone tried this before? thanks, -- Reinout van Schouwen student of Artifical Intelligence email: re...@cs... mobile phone: +31-6-44360778 -- Reinout |

Hey there, I don't know if this is the appropiate place to announce this, or if anyone cares! But i've uploaded a very simple java-gnome app. It's a very simple port monitoring tool. http://www.thecentric.com/jbalorseye.html I'd be very interested if theres a comprehensive list of java gnome apps out there? Or is the applications section of the java-gnome page it? Regards Sean |

Sorry, but that was'nt the question. > AFAIK, you would have > to make modifications to eclipse and possibly also swt to make this work. The This sounds like a "yes, but ...". So i'm interested in that "but" and the "AFIAK". Did anyone try to build an eclipse-plugin using java-gnome? I would love to contribute to your project. I am a Java-Programmer with some experience (finishing my Master in CS in October), and get addicted to free software more and more. I never did open-source development (mostly since I'm not that good at C++), but this project seems to fit my skills :-) regards, Sebastian. |

Thanks It seems that everything compiled well. The messages about 'anything to do' it's the way the make command tells you it has just finished its work: if you didn't see the word 'ERROR', everything is fine. Hello, First, scuse me for my "middle English". I think this question have answer somewhere on the web but I didn't find it. I would like to know what are the advantages to develop with java-gnome instead of swing, awt or swt. java-gnome is specific to one desktop manager but swing or others can be executed everywhere. Is there some functionalities better ? easier? I understood that gtk was included in java-gnome. gtk can be executed everywhere, contrary to java-gnome is it better? I have lots of interrogations, scuse me for my low-level questions. eClaire |

Nothing is wrong. You have already run make and nothing has changed, so there is nothing for the makefile to do.
