You probably compiled java-gnome with jikes. (the makefiles automatically pick a java compiler to use, preferring open source ones). As default, this generates class files which are too new for sun/blackdown java. This can be overridden with jikes --target 1.3. To make java-gnome do this, you would have to modify the makefiles. Alternatively, use another compiler for the job: export JAVAC=javac before running autogen and make will make the scripts use javac rather than jikes. If you do this, be sure to remove all jar and class files first (make clean should do this for you), otherwise some may not be recompiled. -- .''`. I'm running it on fedora since 2 years, there are fedora2 libgtk-java rpm packages avilable as well as semi-official fedora3 java-gnome rpms, everything is linked ion the site. Hey All, I have upgraded my java-gnome ot stable 2.8. Now I am running into a problem with libglade that I did not have with the version 2.6. Hi all, I'm new to this list and didn't bother to read the whole history, so please forgive me if the idea which I want to present ain't new at all. :-) I have never ever written an application using GTK/GNOME, but my skills as a Java programmer are quite good. I played around with the java-gnome binding itself and was surprised how easy it is to create a nice GUI using Glade and then actually loading it using the excellent java-gnome bindings... the documentation on how to do all the tricky things sucks / is just not completed. My English isn't very good as it ain't my native tongue but I could to do some German translations if needed. But now to my actual idea: I'm using Java Web Start to deploy most of my Java/Swing applications. It's a clean and easy way to keep all users of a software product up-to-date. See http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/ It's a technology that 'just works' (tm). I haven't tried yet,... but it should be possible without too many problems to deploy applications that use the java-gnome bindings via Java Web Start, too. Java Web Start uses the Java Net Launching Protocol (JNLP) which is a well documented standard provided by SUN Microsystems. You browse the web, download a jnlp file (XML format) and hand it over to your Web Start application which does the rest for you. It downloads all the required JAR files and (if needed) native libraries, it handles permission control and security (all JAR files need to be digitally signed). Why not write a clone of SUN's original Java Web Start which acts as an JNLP interpreter and handles start menu / desktop integration, caching and updates of already installed Web Start applications and libraries... JNLP spec.: http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart/download-spec.html Maybe the idea is dumb, but it could become some kind of killer application. I'm speaking of an application to deploy platform independent Java applications that integrate nicely into your GNOME desktop. (It might be extended at some further point to be able to load and deploy apps that are e.g. written in python). Test page for my 1st attempt of a java-gnome application that can be started via SUN's Java Web Start: http://phreakzone.com/~bpjung/projects/gws/gws.jnlp (ain't working, yet) The goal should be to create an application that runs using SableVM or any other open source Java Runtime. Maybe it's overkill to use JNLP and the first goal should be to create a data format that is slightly easier to handle... comments anybody? Have fun... Benjamin |

If it's development, then there's plenty to do -- just ask on java-gnome-hackers and we'll try to help you get started. If you have time to test the libraries, find out how they work and then write documents, or example apps to help new users, that would be really useful. I've started a JavaGnomePrimer page on the wiki which will hopefully be like a new user tutorial in the future. You're free to work on that if you want -- one area in particular where we need more documents is about glade. I'm sure there are lots of other things you can do to help too -- It just depends on what you're interested in and able to do. -- .''`. I think you're absolutly right andrew, you make excellant points. i'm gonna rattle off a few things here, hope you dont mind... what is the current tactic to build awareness / user base out there? why can't we have direct links to packages for some of the major distros on the website? if we dont have them - make that a priority (delegate if nessecary) there needs to be a drive to create a killer app developed in java-gnome that merits inclusion in major distros. is there a person dedicated to documentation? are the core maintainers spread too thin? is there a concrete list of stuff that be made up and then delegated to willing people on the list? is java-gnome mature, stable and complete enough for a slashdot or equivilent post? When we joined the gnome platform bindings we comitted to attempting to stay current with the gnome platform. The means that our cvs HEAD will almost always be bleeding edge and require trying to stay current with gnome development. Most developers that wish to use java-gnome should choose to use one of the stable releases like 2.8.x. Even this releases require gnome 2.8 which is not widely distributed at this time. There are a large number of gtk APIs that we need to add prior to our 2.10 release. http://java-gnome.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/bin/view/Main/UpstreamAPIChanges We cannot wait too long before starting this effort. I propose we do the following: Release 2.9.2 - November 29 --------------------------- Retain gtk 2.4 dependency Add 64-bit support Focus on adding missing API to existing bindings Fix currently reported bugs Release 2.9.3 - December 20 --------------------------- We will need to move to gtk 2.5 here Add gtk 2.5 API changes Add gnome 2.9 API changes Add Windows compilation support Release 2.9.4 - January 10 API/ABI Freeze ----------------------------------------- Finish adding gtk and gnome API changes This would mean that we have 25 days to create a release that has the missing API you need. Let me know what you think. -Jeff NOTE: THIS IS A CONFIDENTIAL COMMUNICATION. This transmission is intended only for the use of the individuals or entity to which it is addressed. I go one further than this and ask that we not bump it at all until it is absolutely necessary. We are at a critical point now. We have some momentum here but we need to significantly grow our user, developer, and hacker base or else the project will be in danger of stalling out. Downloading code from CVS just for java-gnome is one thing, but asking someone to track the entire unstable GNOME development is a much higher hurdle. So I for one would be very pleased if one could use & develop java-gnome on top of an otherwise stable (2.8) gnome platform for some time to come. There's nothing wrong with a >=3D gtk 2.4 dependency. Indeed, until GNOME development platform makes a 2.x -> 3.x jump, I don't see why java-gnome shouldn't be designed to work, out of the box, on several older versions. We all know that almost all of our bugs have been around our own bindings, not around changes in the underlying API. Actively promoting this sort of thing would help us attract new developers by making it easier to use j-g for development, and contribute to the bindings themselves. As a result we have to follow a set of rules. Please believe me, I understand your pain. The fact is, we are having a major release every six months and minor releases more frequently. The current 2.9 development effort will be released in about four months. You can help make a difference by helping us ensure we have complete coverage of existing functionality during this time. We have several large items to introduce into the bindings during 2.9 development. We will add support for 64-bit platforms, Windows compilation (hopefully), and a large amount of changes to gtk. I would also like to see our gtkhtml and glade bindings mature over this period. -- Jeffrey Morgan "The highest reward for a man's toil is not what he gets for it, but what he becomse by it" - Jon Ruskin |

This is real bad because if I develop an application which needs the API that weren't in java-gnome 2.8, I'm stuck to using the bleeding edge, potential instable gtk/gnome from CVS which no distribution will ship. This means that any user of such an application will have to go through the hazards of downlaading and installing the gtk/gnome from CVS. We finally got the cvs premissions issue resolved over night last night so we made two releases this morning. An official announcement will be sent out shortly. What does this mean for you? I'll try to summarize here: Stable code We released 2.8.2 this morning. The source tarballs are on the gnome ftp site. We also created a cvs branch to continue to maintain the stable code. The branch is called MAINT_2_8. If you wish to checkout the stable code you will need to reference this branch like: cvs -z3 co -r MAINT_2_8 java-gnome As we make changes to the HEAD we will apply appropriate bug fixes to this branch and will continue to make periodic releases. Development code We also released 2.9.1 this morning. The only change from 2.8.2 is the version created and I increased the gtk dependency from 2.4 to 2.5. Over the next week or so we will be increasing the additional dependencies to force java-gnome HEAD to build with gnome cvs. If you wish to stay current with development I would suggest you use jhbuild to maintain a current gnome environment. The HEAD is where new development will take place. This code should be considered unstable. Since we have started our 2.9 development effort we will now be able to make API additions. I know several of you have posted patches to add missing functionality. We will be applying these patches over the next few days. -- Jeffrey Morgan "The highest reward for a man's toil is not what he gets for it, but what he becomse by it" - Jon Ruskin |

Therefore, any applications you write now will work with any newer 2.x release of java-gnome. The linking problems will hopefully go away as more distributions accept java-gnome as a default package. -- .''`. Mark Howard : :' : `. `' http://www.tildemh.com `- mh...@de... | mh...@ti... |
