Yeah, i found out. Hi all, I write this message just to let you know I'm fed up with trying to compile java gnome for windows, and as I also failed to get help, I will stop using it. I asked for help indeed, but I also offered my help to write documentation (which is something that really lack in java gnome) and debug on windows. At the time I wrote my summary of the different graphical toolkits for java (about a month ago), it was not indicated that windows would not be supported. As java and gtk are both cross platform, I assumed that java gnome will also easily be. I'm glad to see that someone added to the website that it's not. Good luck, even if I wouldn't recommend to others using this toolkit. --- Mehdi |

The example that I have submitted the last day it was just for handling p= lain text files. If you're using MessageBundles to handle the localization strings = you must do another thing. As I read in some mailing list there's a "bug" in JDK that forces all Mes= sageBundle files parsing to be in iso-8859-15 format. So, the right way is to write = all MessageBundles in iso-8859-15 encoding instead of utf-8. I fixed this in the gdvb-git repo. And now everything is ok :) I've teste= d this on a iso-8859-15 system and "elektranox" on a utf8 environ. I'll update the localization tutorial in the java-gnome wiki. --pancake On Sun, 18 Jun 2006 18:46:09 +1000 Andrew Cowie <an...@op...> wrote: > On Sat, 2006-06-17 at 17:51 +0200, pancake wrote: > > System.out.println(line); // will show strange chars on iso8859 termi= nals > > new Label(line); // will be ok for iso8859 X or utf8 ones > >=20 >=20 > > So, I don't need special chars for the console ATM. >=20 > Perhaps a bit off topic, but a few weeks ago we were having a shindig o= n > #gnome-hackers about how to use the [a] Compose key to express unusual > characters like =C2=BB, =C2=B0 and =E2=82=AC. >=20 > Along the way I mused that it would be so cool if such things worked in > my terminals and davyd asked what my LANG setting was. >=20 > export LANG=3D"en_CA" >=20 > I responded, and his immediate comeback was "switch to >=20 > export LANG=3D"en_CA.UTF-8" >=20 > in your .bashrc, logout, login again, and rock on" >=20 > Works like a charm - my gnome-terminals are all beautifully displaying > the unicode characters \u00bb, \u2026 etc and I just use > System.out.println() - no mucking around with encodings and extra strea= m > wrappers. >=20 > One observation - Jikes gets messed up if you put something like "blah > blah =C2=BB blah blah" in a hardcoded String - the result is like "blah= blah > =C3=85=C2=BB blah blah". Perhaps a bit off topic, but a few weeks ago we were having a shindig on #gnome-hackers about how to use the [a] Compose key to express unusual characters like », ° and €. Along the way I mused that it would be so cool if such things worked in my terminals and davyd asked what my LANG setting was. export LANG="en_CA" I responded, and his immediate comeback was "switch to export LANG="en_CA.UTF-8" in your .bashrc, logout, login again, and rock on" Works like a charm - my gnome-terminals are all beautifully displaying the unicode characters \u00bb, \u2026 etc and I just use System.out.println() - no mucking around with encodings and extra stream wrappers. One observation - Jikes gets messed up if you put something like "blah blah » blah blah" in a hardcoded String - the result is like "blah blah Å» blah blah". Eclipse doesn't have any problem, but I do put in "blah blah \u00bb blah blah" in Strings just to be safe as we tend to use Jikes when building from make. AfC Sydney |

Great..I think I found the solution, but this only works on GTK, not in console The way is: BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader( new InputStreamReader( new FileInputStream(filename), "UTF-8")); String line = br.readLine(); System.out.println(line); // will show strange chars on iso8859 terminals new Label(line); // will be ok for iso8859 X or utf8 ones So, I don't need special chars for the console ATM. I am pretty sure our gtk+ requirements have not magically been upped in the recent releases. If the patches provided in the win32 bug ( http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=339270) does not work, you should consider commenting on the bug or emailing Rob directly to get further assistance. I can't even pass the configure process. The required libs are too recent to have been ported to windows/cygwin/mingw/whatever. I'm stuck, so I don't have anything else to do than test with jars or directly with the sources within eclipse. Or rewrite my whole app with swt, or switching from windows customers to linux customers. As I mentioned to you before in a personal email, sending you the JAR files alone isn't going to be very helpful. If you can build the C library but not the Java code, please file a bug. Although this is unlikely as I'm pretty sure the java compilation process begins before the C compilation process. I can't really make any authoritative comments either way, but GNOME (and GTK underneath it) is fully internationalized. Whenever I enter a unicode character (with Compose key or gnome-charmap or whatever) into an Entry I have no problems, either with java-gnome or with asking for getText() for the java String [which is composed of Characters, which are multi-byte...] Jikes has some issues with unicode characters in source code - for example, I use \u00bb rather than » directly in hard coded Strings so that Jikes doesn't do stupid things on me. I've written a small program to check a encoding problem that I had suffer with java. I think java-gnome has nothing to do here, but I would like to fix this localization bugs for the next version of gdvb. http://news.nopcode.org/Encoding.tar.gz It reads two files (one with utf8 and the another one in iso8859), and the output is: Using ISO8859_1 for file hello-UTF8 =3D> Contents: 'H=C3=A8llo W=C3=B3rld =C3=A7=C3 =C3=B1=C3' Using ISO8859_1 for file hello-ISO8859 =3D> Contents: 'H=E8llo W=F3rld =E7=C7 =F1=D1' It looks like Java doesn't gets the file encoding automagically, but I don't know how to set the charset for the FileReader class. BTW the other question is..when I've read the string .. do I have to reencode't to the system's default encoding ? The program creates a java-gtk window and shows both strings. The utf8 file was generated by iconv -t UTF8 from the iso8859 one (my system uses iso8859). Thanks. --pancake |

Hi, Is there a place where I can download the lastest jar files for libgtk-java, glib-java and cairo-java ? If no, is someone will be kind enough to send them to me? I can't campile anything and I want to try with them directly. Thanks in advance, -- Mehdi |

Hi developers, Does anyone of you already successfully compiled the last version of libgtk-java or glib-java with msys/mingw or cygwin? I'm having a really hard time with dependencies (not with jg itself), I hope someone already did this. Any help is appreciated, -- Mehdi |

Thanks again. I think I will indeed do this. For archives, there is also this link http://java-gnome.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/bin/view/Main/WindowsCompilation On 6/12/06, Remy Suen <rem...@gm...> wrote: > > Also, in case you lost the link, you might want to look at the Win32 bug > and see if you can build the later versions from CVS.
