Hi All, The final release of JAMWiki 1.1 was postponed a bit while a search issue was addressed (http://jira.jamwiki.org/browse/JAMWIKI-2), but now that the issue has been fixed I'm planning on pushing the release on either Tuesday or Wednesday. If anyone has translation updates that they would like to get into this release, PLEASE either commit them to Subversion or submit them via jamwiki.org as soon as possible. Currently the German translation appears to be complete (thanks Axel!) and Russian is very close to complete (thanks Shar!), but other languages are in need of attention. If you need help contributing a translation, see http://jamwiki.org/wiki/en/How_to_Help#Translations for details. As always, many thanks to those who have contributed to this project. Ryan Holliday |

The third beta for JAMWiki 1.1 is now available for download: * http://jamwiki.org/download/jamwiki-1.1-beta3.war * http://jamwiki.org/download/jamwiki-1.1-beta3-src.zip * http://jamwiki.org/download/jamwiki-1.1-beta3-src.tar.gz Unless significant issues are found I am expecting that this will be the last beta release and that JAMWiki 1.1 final will be ready to release in the next 1-3 weeks, so PLEASE help out by reporting any issues with the new code. Release notes for the beta are at http://jamwiki.org/wiki/en/Latest_News#JAMWiki_1.1_Beta_3. As with the other betas, bug reports, success reports, translation updates, and documentation updates would all be very much appreciated. Cheers, Ryan |

The second beta for JAMWiki 1.1 is now available for download: * http://jamwiki.org/download/jamwiki-1.1-beta2.war * http://jamwiki.org/download/jamwiki-1.1-beta2-src.zip * http://jamwiki.org/download/jamwiki-1.1-beta2-src.tar.gz Normally I would wait longer than one week between betas, but the first beta had some issues on MS SQL, Oracle, and possibly other databases that prevented user blocking and unblocking from working properly, and since that is a key feature for 1.1 it seemed prudent to get a new beta out sooner. Release notes for the beta are at http://jamwiki.org/wiki/en/Latest_News#JAMWiki_1.1_Beta_2. As with the first beta, bug reports, success reports, translation updates, and documentation updates would all be very much appreciated. Cheers, Ryan |

Hi All, It's been nearly six months since the release of JAMWiki 1.0, and the next major release is nearing completion. At this point JAMWiki 1.1 should be feature-complete, and as is traditional I'll push a series of beta releases to try and flush out any remaining bugs prior to final release. The first of those beta releases is now available for download from jamwiki.org: * http://jamwiki.org/download/jamwiki-1.1-beta1.war * http://jamwiki.org/download/jamwiki-1.1-beta1-src.zip * http://jamwiki.org/download/jamwiki-1.1-beta1-src.tar.gz Draft release notes for the JAMWiki 1.1 release can be found at http://jamwiki.org/wiki/en/JAMWiki_1.1 and include a list of features, bug fixes, and installation instructions. While the code has been very stable for me and is currently running on jamwiki.org, remember that this is a BETA release and that it may have issues. For those with time available to help out with the final release, the following would be particularly useful: * Any success/failure reports for installations and upgrades are very valuable and can be reported at http://jamwiki.org/wiki/en/Feedback. In particular, I've done a lot of testing with Postgres and Tomcat but would be interested in hearing what other databases and application servers people have tested the code on and any success/problems they've encountered. * Translation updates would be very helpful. This release includes a lot of new strings, and aside from English I think only Russian and perhaps German are close to complete. See http://jamwiki.org/wiki/en/How_to_Help#Translations for details on getting involved with translations and note that any help at all is greatly appreciated. * Bug reports are HUGELY helpful and can be made at http://jira.jamwiki.org. In particular, if people can try out the new editor toolbar on different browsers and test other new features it would be great to get deeper test coverage. * Finally, any help in improving documentation on jamwiki.org, or even suggestions for improvement, would be greatly appreciated. Between now and the final release I would expect that the only changes to the code will be fixes and minor cleanups, as well as translation updates. Depending on how many bugs are found in the current code the final JAMWiki 1.1 release should be ready in anywhere from 3-6 weeks, although I'm notoriously bad at predicting release dates so please don't plan your next upgrade based on that estimate. Thanks to all who have contributed to this release and past releases. Cheers, Ryan |

Forwarding to the jamwiki-devel list as the project below may be of interest to others... -------- Original Message -------- Subject: bayesian classifier project Date: Wed, 8 Jun 2011 11:19:55 -0400 From: Daniel Fisla Hi Ryan, I decided to release the Bayesian spam filter that I used in my jamwiki code base as a separate project on Google Code. http://code.google.com/p/itmatter-bayes/ My code is based on the ci-bayes project with changes documented in: http://code.google.com/p/itmatter-bayes/wiki/Introduction http://code.google.com/p/itmatter-bayes/wiki/HowToBuild The project comes with sample training data and could be easily integrated using RESTful web service - or any other external call from jamwiki. Hi All, I've added an update on the status of upcoming JAMWiki releases and maintenance on the jamwiki.org at http://jamwiki.org/wiki/en/Latest_News#Current_Development_Status. The short summary is that JAMWiki 1.0.4 should be ready for release in the next 1-2 weeks, JAMWiki 1.1 is on target for release in August/September, and jamwiki.org may be down for a few hours for an OS upgrade in the coming weeks. I am expecting to have a lot of time available in June for JAMWiki development work and have outlined some of the things that I'd personally like to get done at http://jamwiki.org/wiki/en/Tech:JAMWiki_1.1. As always, if anyone else on this list has a feature, bugfix, or other change that they'd like to see implemented please discuss it on this mailing list or on jamwiki.org and we can work to get it included in an upcoming release. Thanks again to everyone for past contributions, and enjoy the upcoming summer months. Ryan |

This won't work.Do not compare GWT with Servlet/JSPs based stuff. You should seek help in an Eclipse forum on: Debug applications. This is list specific to JAMWiki development and nothing else. Hi gmdduf, I don't personally use Eclipse so hopefully someone else on this list can help, but currently people have added steps for setting up JAMWiki on Eclipse at http://jamwiki.org/wiki/en/Building_from_Source#Working_in_your_favorite_IDE. Please feel free to update this document with any additional information that you find to be useful. Hi All, I've experience in GWT but newbi to Maven. I just setup JAMwiki on my eclipse and got package and it work after deploy into Tomcat. Question is how to setup eclipse debugging environment for step-by-step trace of servelt code without deploying to Tomcat just like GWT does? is there some tutorial? Thanks, gmdduf |

Hi all, It's been fairly quiet on the JAMWiki development front as I've been busy with work and others have their own schedules, but I expect to the pace of development to pick up in the coming months. In the mean time, here's a quick status on the progress of the next minor and major releases: JAMWiki 1.0.3 ============= Following the monthly minor release schedule, the next release is due for early May. At the moment there are translation updates for Chinese and Dutch queued, and I'm looking into a bug report with the jam_topic_links table. If anyone else has any other minor fixes or bug reports, please bring them up ASAP as this release is fast approaching. JAMWiki 1.1 =========== Assuming a standard release cycle of about six months, the next major JAMWiki release is due for late July or early August, although I'd guess this release might be pushed out about a month later. An overview of items that have been implemented or are planned for this release can be found at http://jamwiki.org/wiki/en/Tech:JAMWiki_1.1.0, and anyone interested in working on a new feature is welcome to do so, but please be sure to discuss new features on this mailing list or at jamwiki.org so that they can be developed collaboratively. That's all for now - thanks to everyone on this list for your past contributions. Ryan |

Daniel Fisla has been doing some interesting work with JAMWiki for some time now, and helped greatly in identifying performance issues for the past two major releases. We've been corresponding privately via email, but the exchange below might be interesting to some others on this list so I'm forwarding it on. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: Interesting performance and rendering problem Date: Thu, 31 Mar 2011 15:00:35 -0400 From: Daniel Fisla To: Ryan Holliday Hi Ryan, I realized that it will take some time for me to create in-depth documentation, for now feel free o forward the following into the dev mailing list. ITMATTER version of JAMWiki is an experimental fork of 0.9.X trunk. JAMWiki was modified as a result of experimenting with the following: - to aid in analysis of Wikipedia content - to handle dealing with very large sets of Mediawiki content/data - to integrate with statistical classifier that could be used as a general content classifier in addition to spam content classifier - to integrate with NLP parsers such as OpenNLP to aid in NLP parsing, entity extraction, and semantic analysis beyond structured information Wikipedia (en) mirror: http://www.uniblogger.com Wikinews (en) mirror: htttp://www.uniblogger.com/news/main_page Some statistics on hosted content: 4.5M topics (articles, templates, categories) 122M topic links High-level modifications/enhancements are: 1. Back-end data model and SQL tuned for MySQL InnoDB 5.5+ 2. Ehcache is only used for memory caching of db objects, using a custom solution to cache rendered topics 3. Uses gwtwiki bliki parser add-on/plug-in with updated JAM Wiki Model and HTML Converter 4. Implemented concurrent and distributed rebuilding of topics, topic links, categories, including Google pagerank calculation for topic ranking 5. Implemented mirror/fetch to mirror content using gwtwiki Query API using Mediawiki interface 6. Implemented integration with OpenNLP tools 1.4.3 for POS parsing, co-reference and entity extraction 7. In addition to standard JAMWiki data API, using Hibernate model for backed processing services 8. Initial integration with modified version of ci-bayes classifier for probabilistic spam filtering/training 9. Some other minor changes Outstanding items: 1. Looking for a good host for project source code 2. Build scrips could use some cleanup 3. Dealing with all of variations of syntax/markup/styling in Wikipedia content is challenging - especially parses error handling. It depends on the degree of desired compatibility will all of the Wikipedia/Mediawiki extensions, templates, and content publishing practices. 4. Move text analysis modules (OpenNLP, Google pagerank, semantic web analysis) into separate projects using a separate database schema/back-end (graph database) 5. Documentation If anyone has any questions they can reach me directly at df...@it... <mailto:df...@it...> or the jamwiki mailing list. Cheers, -Daniel. On Mon, Mar 21, 2011 at 3:46 PM, Daniel Fisla wrote: Hi Ryan, thanks for getting back to me. I solved the rendering problem with partial rendering of topics based on content length threshold - I render only first X sections. Then, I have a back-end service that listens for events for partially rendered topics inserted into the render cache and rebuilds them in full as needed. I use database triggers to update event table which is watched by the offline rendering service. I would love for you to forward this to the dev mailing list but I want to do a 1 page writeup describing the details of my work. I have to do this anyway. I already started, but I will need another week or two. I want to explain the motivation behind my efforts to hopefully put things in the right context. I will send you an update soon. Cheers, -Daniel. On Sun, Mar 20, 2011 at 2:04 PM, Ryan Holliday wrote: Thanks for the update - that's awesome that you've been able to set up these mirrors. Would you mind if I forwarded your email on to the new jamwiki-developer mailing list? This seems like news that other developers might be interested in. Also, apologies on not getting back to you on your previous email - I've been busy, and wanted to give your problem some thought before responding. Obviously there hasn't yet been much time to think through the issue... Ryan On 3/19/2011 2:38 PM, Daniel Fisla wrote: Hi Ryan, just wanted to let you know that I have released new code: Wikinews Mirror http://www.uniblogger.com/news/Main%20Page and Wikipedia Mirror http://www.uniblogger.com/ <http://www.uniblogger.com/news/Main%20Page> I am still working on some code cleanup before releasing the project and currently have a minor issue with interlinking. Hi All, It's been about a month since the last minor JAMWiki release, so I'd like to get JAMWiki 1.0.2 out in the next few days. At the moment the only significant change that is queued is a fix for a MS SQL issue, although I'll take some time over the weekend to investigate a few other bug reports to see if additional fixes are possible. If anyone has a translation update or a minor bug fix that they'd like to see released please either commit it to the 1.0.x branch or let me know ASAP. Thanks! Ryan |

Quick update: As further proof that I should never try to predict release dates, JAMWiki 1.0.1 won't go out today, so I missed the "before the end of the week" goal. There were two relatively important fixes that went in during the past week, so I'd like an additional day or two to test these out, after which the release should be ready to go. Sorry for any confusion. Ryan |

Hi All, It's been more than a month since JAMWiki 1.0, so it's past due for the first bugfix release. At the moment there are two changes queued in the 1.0.x branch - a fix for a Lucene locking issue and some updates for the ASA database. There have been a handful of other Lucene bug reports that I'm hoping to investigate, but whether those are fixed or not I'd like to release 1.0.1 before next week. If you've found any issues with 1.0 that you've either got a fix for or would like to see fixed please make them known ASAP. Similarly, if anyone has translation updates that they want included in 1.0.1 please get them submitted in the next couple of days. Thanks! Ryan |

Hi Ryan: I was testing the new changes, and everything works except that if search.jsp is activated, the Search powered by shows ?????? instead of either "Lucene" or "RankingAlgorithm". This works correctly if search-results.jsp gets activated. Atleast from what I understand, search.jsp seems to get activated if you click on the search button without entering any search terms. Both seem to use the same mechanism to get the resource searchConfig.key2 but in one case this seems to be valid and returns the right value while in the other seems to be out of scope and returns either a null or "????". Thanks Ryan! Let me know if I need to do anything. I was trying to sync up with the trunk as per Mike's suggestion but ran into some problems. Hi, I took a look at the latest changes - I'd like to make sure that none of the protected methods in LuceneSearchEngine can remain private, and I'd like to look at some alternatives to hard-coding the searching engine link on the JSPs, but otherwise I didn't immediately see any issues. Hopefully I'll have some free time and this can be merged this weekend. Ryan On 2/20/2011 1:10 PM, jam...@li... wrote: > Hi Ryan: > > I have committed the access modifier changes. Hi! I would like to announce the release of RankingAlgorithm ver 1.1 and would like to invite you to try it out. It is very good and does not need any changes to your existing indexes but the way they are accessed, ranked and scored changes. This version has Score Boosting enabling Document, Field and Query & Query Term boosting, norms and bug fixes to scoring and ranking, and is a little more faster. You can download and try it out from here: http://rankingalgorithm.tgels.com If you do not use search directly, please forward to your friends and colleagues who are using Lucene for their search as this works with existing Lucene indexes with no changes. Thanks Ryan for taking a look. Only one method findResults is needed in RankingAlgorithmSearchEngine, the rest defaults to LuceneSearchEngine methods. I will change the access modifiers to protected. - NN On 2/17/2011 7:29 PM, jam...@li... wrote: > Hi, > > One feedback item - it looks RankingAlgorithmSearchEngine has several > unused private methods copied from LuceneSearchEngine.
