GPL? Licensing

Is there any chance of JamVM being released under a non-GPL license?   LGPL or similar would make JamVM much more useful as an embedded VM (especially if the license allowed static linking).  Currently GPL prevents any embedded usage in commercial applications.

I have no problem giving back changes/source to the JamVM project itself, but GPL is too invasive for commercial use.

Since the VM is designed to be light and small, embedded usage is where it really shines.

    Thanks.

I agree with that.  It looks like GNU:Classpath is issued under a GPL++ (or -- depending on your perspective) license: http://www.gnu.org/software/classpath/license.html

It would be great if Jam was offered under something similar.  Any plans guys?

        Hi,
I definitely agree, and I posted some messages on the mailing list, but the project owner does not seem to care, as he does not reply to these queries.

As a result I have been using SableVM:

        www.sablevm.org

        Which is licensed under LGPL.

It's only twice as big as JamVM with the proper config flags.

        Regards,
        Philippe

N.B.: it may lok lame to promote another VM on this list, but it is much lamer to ignore licensing issues...

          Hi,
May I add that the project owner was supposed to give a talk at FOSDEM, but it seems that no more.

Maybe he wanted to avoid being asked about licensing issues?

          :-)

          Regards,
          Philippe
